external hard drive into laptop?

post #1 of 2
Thread Starter
Hello all.

I have a ZV5000 laptop that has a relatively small 40Gb hard drive. That is not enough storage space for all my photo's and MP3's. I just purchased a relatively new Western Digital Passport 80Gb external hard drive for $20 (I couldn't pass up that deal). Obviously I could use it as is for a backup, however I would rather (if possible) crack the case on the passport and install it in the laptop and reinstall the 40gb in the passport case as my back up. Is something like this possible? Will this drive even install in my laptop. Thanks to anyone who provides me with an answer.

.

It may or may not work depending on the interface.

If the Western Digital Passport 80Gb external hard drive uses a "laptop" drive inside of it, it should work IF both use the same interface (connectors)... Some laptops /drive using SATA the others ide..

ZV5000 being like almost 3 years old will be a regular laptop ide, not SATA.

ZV5000=Release date: 2/1/04

PS: You should check the power requirements of both drives to make sure they are pretty close...
