dajohu, could you elaborate on the 'phone calls from customs' part you mentioned? I wasnt even aware i needed to provide a phone number when i shipped something?

I actually already told him no, but im still curious if i ever have an international sale oppurtunity again. Just some good stuff to know.

Well in thinking back, I know the very first time I purchased anything on e-bay, guess what? I didn't have any feed back either. I mean geez come on. I have only brought a few things on e-bay over the years, so I probably only have about 10 feed back if that many. I would be more concerned about buying from someone with little or no feedback than selling to one.

PayPal offers some pretty good protection. Not as good as a face to face transaction where you hand me the money and I hand you the item, but pretty good protection none the less. And as long as PayPal says that so and so just made a cash deposit of X dollars to your account before you even wrap the item, whats the problem.

You 2 reach an understanding..... Once your PayPal payment clears and the cash has been depositied into my account, I ship the laptop to whatever address in the world you want it shipped to. You agree that you will pay shipping, insurance and whatever else. Also you deal with the customs people. Remember, you paid for it, it's your computer.

On the other hand I would refuse to do any kind of e-bay deal with anyone asking me for any kind of personal information. They don't need it, I'm not gonna give it, end of story. If they got a problem with that attitude theyh can move on down the road.

I had someone who wanted me to ship my 9100 to Africa. They sent fraudulent PayPal e-mails stating that "after the shipment has been received, the payment will be processed to ensure a safe and secure transaction". Originally, I responded to him that I would ship to Africa, as long as he was willing to pay of course. But after receiving those e-mails, it was easy to see his plan, so I reported him to eBay and PayPal.

The lack of feedback is just that, lack of feedback. Im not saying it means hes a scammer, but hes got nothing to show hes not either. Just because the money is in the paypal account does not means its safe. Its safe once its extracted into your bank account, which takes 3 to 4 days. If its still in your paypal account, paypal can withdraw it and return it, however if its not in your paypal account, paypal cant authrorize themselves to charge your credit card.

I fell for the Ship to russian deal a few years ago,

It got there, then Paypal told me the payment was in dispute
1 week later my payment was reversed

The laptop box came back to me empty as well.

The only time you can be certain with a Paypal payment is under the following conditions

1. The paypal statement will tells you the buyer is verfied.
2. The Paypal statement tells you you are protected.
3. The paypal statement telss you the address is confirmed.

If any of those are missing then you don't do it.

By the way I have had buyers in North America try to scam me with fraudulent paypal payments, if the feedback on the person is at or near Zero, I usually wait 24-48 hours to ship to make sure Payapal does not reverse its payment, Yes i actually had a verifed payment reversed, fortunately I had not shipped the item.

So althought I enjoy buying and selling on Ebay, It is always buyer/seller beware, if your not sure, then don't go through with it, after all better safe than sorry and out a 1000 dollars.

Also, for those who say "who cares if their feedback is zero, we all started at zero at one time":

IMO your very first purchase should not be such a high dollar item. Buy some smaller items first to get some feedback THEN work your way up. The same is true for both buyers and sellers. I wouldn't want to buy a $1000+ item from someone with a very low or zero feedback, and I would not sell to one either.

Ebay feedback is like your credit, you wouldn't expect to be 18 years old with your first credit card and have a 20k limit on it either, thankfully (under normal circumstances). You have to get a job, make some money, buy, pay bill, buy, hold balance for a while, pay bill etc.
