Adding Bluetooth to U200/U205/Tecra M6

Bluetooth is an option when you order these notebooks configured from Toshiba. I bought a U205-S5044 from CompUSA and it didn't have bluetooth. After much experimentation and research, I found the parts to add bluetooth to the U200/U205/Tecra M6.

You need these parts from SparePartsWarehouse.com:
$5.00 P000421420 Screw
$33.85 P000433310 Bluetooth Module (2.0+EDR) - you'll need to flip the plastic tab on the cable connector to make it work. (the picture is wrong on their website)
$5.00 P000435350 Cable - $5
$5.00 P000435360 Bluetooth Label

You'll need a bluetooth antenna. Any internal wireless card antenna will work. I used one from a spare laptop that I had for parts.

The bluetooth module mounts under the enter key on the keyboard. You'll have to remove the keyboard, and top cover to get to it, which means removing every F8 & F16 screw underneath, as well as 2 screws to get the keyboard off, and 3 more screws under the keyboard. You'll also need to peel back the clear plastic covers under the keyboard to release the ribbon cables for the touchpad, power button panel, and fingerprint reader.

yeah, it should work just fine on your U205-S5034. one thing i forgot to mention in my original post is that i had to reverse the cable holding clip on the bluetooth card to make the cable contact correctly on that card. also, anytime you open your laptop up, you risk voiding your warranty. pm me with your email address and i'll send you a pic.

Hi I'm attempting this install and have a question. What do you mean by reversing the cable holding clip? And how did you do it? Thanks!

the little brown cable clip on the card needs to be reversed so the exposed metal on the cable contacts the card. you carefully pry off the piece of the clip the secures the cable in place on the card, and turn it around. toshiba has published a document on adding a bluetooth kit to this notebook, but they don't cover this step, as they probably sell a kit now that has the clip oriented correctly. here's the link to the document: http://cdgenp01.csd.toshiba.com/cont...llite_U200.pdf

Oh ok. I tried peeling the blue hard piece of the cable off, bending the cable back and sticking it in the connector. I booted it up and got the add new hardware screen (saying it detected a new usb device). Did you have any software/driver issues? I'm going to go back and reverse the clip per your instructions. Thanks a lot!

DON'T peel anything off the cable! if it's detecting a new usb device, don't swap the clip yet. i had the best luck with the toshiba bluetooth stack that you can download from their drivers page.

oops! i peeled the blue piece off the cable. However, i flipped the brown piece in the connector, hooked the cable back up, rebooted, and i got the add hardware usb device again. So maybe all is not lost! Now i will play with drivers. Thanks!

Uninstall and reinstall of drivers, and it worked! Yay! Thanks so much for posting the part nu mbers and instructions on how to do this. I didn't use an antenna b/c i just want to use a bluetooth mouse. Thanks!

thank you!

Thanks for the tip. I have been trying to work out why by bluetooth module does not work. The inverted connector on the motherboard or card had me wondering, so now I am off to test it. I have also used a length of wifi cable for an antenna.

So do I NEED the $33 bluetooth module if I already have a dongle? Or are they completely different and I need to purchase it? AWESOME AWESOME thread btw.. It was very annoying having to plug in the dongle all the time!

can someone also help me find a wireless card antennae from the site? im not sure which to get?
No you don't need the module. If you get the module you will not need the dongle anymore since you will have built-in bluetooth.

ooh, ok, i thought i could somehow fit the dongle inside the laptop.. but what i really wanted is the built in BT.. so i guess i would need the module... can anyone help me find the internal wireless card antenna from that site as well..?? im looking and its like $50, but i maybe looking at the wrong one... thanks

I have looked closely at this rotating the clip on the module. After thinking deeply, if you rotate the clip, then you are making it easy to connect the cabin correctly... but pin 1 on the connector is now going to be connected to pin x on the motherboard....

I tweaked to this because no matter what I did, the module did not turn up in hardware profile in control panels.... so, instead, I folded the long cable (supplied) in such a way, that I was able to in effect, un turn the exposed connector edge.

With that in place, I now have "bluetooth ACPI from tosiba" appearing under system devices.

The next challenge is the drivers. I have tried a v4 and v5 toshiba driver install.... and it gets to a point and just hangs.. pooh.

I have now been stabbing away at this install for 3 weeks... and only making slow progress toward working bluetooth. I think it may be easier to purchase a notebook with bluetooth pre-installed :-)

PS: Has anyone got a BT module going in a U205? If so, please tell me which version of the drivers you were successful with? Ta

For an external usb bluetooth module (Belkin F8012xx1) I'm using the Broadcom 5.1.2535.0 drivers. I had many problem with an IOGEAR bluetooth module.

I don't like how Vista installs devices. I can't get Windows to search for drivers on it's own. I have to specify the directory of the drivers as C:\.

If you're looking for a wireless antenna search eBay for "laptop internal antenna". You should be able to find something cheap there.

I guess you are not alone. I am on the same boat...

I have been playing around with the bluetooth module for over a month. I was able to install it with the clip reversed (actually I thought about the pin problem and I have tried it both ways and windows XP/Vista detected the "bluetooth ACPI") on my U200-PT3 (Canadian model). Howeve, I was stuck when installing the bluetooth stack on the screen "Installing Bluetooth driver..." with 5 blocks on the progress bar. I left it running for the whole night but the progress bar just not moving. I tried to restore the image from the recovery DVD just in case other programs were affecting it but didn't help. I even installed Vista from scratch (not upgrade) and tried the lastest bluetooth stack from Toshiba, same thing... stuck on the same screen. Since the system detected the "bluetooth ACPI", does it mean the bluetooth module is installed correctly? Or I got a defective module/cable?

If anyone has any update or progress on this, please let me know.
