Refurbished systems - A good idea?

I was wondering what type of experiences some of you have had with the refurbished systems from DELL. It looks like you can save significant amounts by going for one of these systems but I'm a bit hesitant due to the vexing word "refurbished". Do the systems look/feel/perform like new?

Looking at 8600 1.7, 512 (1 DIMM), 64 or 128 video, 5400 RPM HD, WSXGA+, 1300 WiFi

I bought a refurbed dell for a server computer, I couldn't tell the difference from it and a new one

Purchased my 8600 via the Outlet site. Just like new. Alot of these refurbs are just a 30 day return. Any problem with them has generally been corrected. That is to say if there was a problem to begin with. You won't know the difference once you purchase it if it was new or refurb. I think it is the only way to go if you want to save money.

make sure you get complete care , thats a valuable feature that dell sells

I have bought nothing but Dell refurbs......The savings is woth it. I would imagine they are tested twice as well. Once when "new". Again when they have to reload the opsys to resell.

Buy complete care if you think you may do something really dumb. Otherwise save your money. If you buy with a platnium card you will get an extra year of warranty "free" as well, The third year is not worth the price. From what I have read the service is not worth the cost of the warranty. Im reading where buyers of the onsite warranty are being told by Dell to open their cases and well I guess the lappy is mostly user serviceable!!!????.

Check out this link:
Dell Service?????? you are kidding!

If I were paying 20% over and above the cost of the product for an onsite warranty, I certainly would not like to be told how to "fix it myself."

That "lack of support" should be reserved for guys like me that DON"T ever buy extended warrantys on anything

I have purchased 3 refurb laptops (8200, 5150, 8600). All 3 have been as perfect as a new one. My 8600 came with a perfect Samsung (SXGA+) screen. I say refurbs are smart money.

with refurbs you also have less waiting on it sbuild time and less imperfections due to its "reconditioning"

Thanks for all the input! It looks like refurbs are definately the way to go to save a few bucks.

Does Dell sell refurbished systems in Canada? Can anyone give me a link so I can see what they are currently offering.

I wanted to go the refurb route, but couldn't find a laptop that met my specs that was a better deal than simply buying new. I wanted a maxed-out laptop (WUXGA screen, DVD burner, ATI 9600 Radeon video card, etc), and they are a) hard to find; b) often include a lot of expensive Dell memory, which drives the price up; c) often has the wrong software (e.g. XP home instead of XP pro). I finally gave up and bought new, when a 15%-off coupon showed up on these boards. Thanks guys!
