Whats with my 3dmark06 score?

I finally downloadd and try myself the famous 3dmark06

I wasnt expecting to get the best score ever cause I dont even know how to OC a thing, but at least with my XPS Gen 2 configuration (signature) I was expecting a little more

First of all my score:1499

I remember guys with the same configuration as mine getting 4ks of score.. I may be remembering wrong tho so you can correct me cause Im an ignorant on this subject

So I have some questions:

1-I got a peak temperature of 95c when running the test, is this safe at all?

2-Its normal to get 0 fps on the cpu's test?

3-Its normal to get around 3-6 fps on the other tests?

4-I have only 19gigs of around 55 free in my HDD, could this lower the performance of my lappy?

5-And finally, what can I do to improve my notebook performance without ocing?

I will repeat the test after I refresh my notebook for a couple of minutes, I wanna do it at a lower temperature.

Thanks in advance

95C is the downclock point of the 6800 ultra. Its getting too hot and cutting the power in half. Open the laptop or at least used canned air to blow out all the dust that is probably blocking the fans. I think 6800 ultras should be getting lower 2000's in 3dmark06

So my score isnt that bad?

What about the 0 fps at the cpu test?

That's normal too, that 2ghz isn't that powerful with that test anyway. It takes a monster to get any descent fps with 06.

Is there anything I can do to increase the performance beside cleaning the vents? (I will do that eventually)

Depends on how far you want to go.

Doing a pinmod will increase the score by a few hundred points. Overclocking the video card can grant you about a thousand points, depends on how high you go.

Allowing your card to run at it's full potential will be the best, so get it cleaned out. If you plan to overclock it, then take the heatsink off the GPU and apply some AS5 too it. It's best to take the laptop apart to clean it by the way. Instead of just blowing the dust all in your lappy.

I ran the test again, 1684

I think thats the far I can go, cause I let my lappy cool down before doing this one

I dont have a clue for OCing a thing, but I know there are a few guides that show you how to OC safely

So what you recommend me for better performance in games, the pinmod thing or OC the videocard?

About cleaning the fans, I try to take it apart, but only manage to remove the keyboard, I didnt knew if I was going the right way cause I couldn find any guide on how to disarm the lappy

After I take the keyboard out, should I continue unscrewing that plate with lots of Ps on it?

Thanks

Overclocking the video card will give you way more performance in gaming and a much better score.

To take your laptop apart, you'll have to remove the keyboard and ALL the screws under the keyboard as well was the ones on the back of the laptop going around the edge. I'm not 100% for sure on the XPS, but I know there are a LOT of screws to remove on my i9300.

Once you get it off, the rest should be pretty easy if you have any knowledge of computers.

Mid 1k's is absolutely normal for an XPS Gen2. My old one scored roughly 1,400-1,550 at various points with different drivers so thats actually quite a good score. As for the CPU tests, Skillz is right, the Pentium M just isnt that powerful anymore. I didn't think that there would be huge increase in performance between my old and new XPS seeing as there's only a year between them but the difference is unbelievable.

Also when you say that a lot of people with the same config are getting mid 4,000's, thats because they are using 3DMark 05 and not 06, in which you should be scoring around the lower 5,000's

try checking your pc for spyware a lot of times just having too many programs running will hurt the test. You want to do the test on a fresh reboot you want the test to be the second thing you do when you boot into windows.

The first is go to task manager (ctrl+alt+delete+) and... i guess this depends on how proficient you are with task manager. i understand if its foreign language in there. The task manager shows a list of the programs that are running in the background. try to look for programs that shouldnt be there... like programs with long weird names or ones that say something like bestdealsaround or ishopping something like that if you know your way around taskbar just look for anything that you dont need to have running and kill it. THEN launch the test.

If you have too much spyware on your pc when you open taskbar you get 90+ tasks running. Maybe its time for a reinstall of xp? (after backing up and reformatting the hd first) maybe? how long have you had XP running on this pc without a reformat?

Temperature: If yours is anything like my 7800 GTX was, you might have a nice wad of dust blocking the entrance to the heatsinks between the fans and heatsinks.

Speed: Here's one that I didnt see mentioned...Maybe check the Windows power scheme, maybe you have it on max power savings even when plugged in?

Wow not good I score 1503 with my X300, OC'd at 434.08/313.62 What I found out is make a new profile on ur comp and dont install anything except the programs your going to use for OCing and monitoring. Definitly raise the laptop so you can get fresh cool air and allow hot air out, and definitly run anti-virus/spyware/etc thats what helped my scores alot, also think about getting CCleaner, http://www.ccleaner.com/ make sure you make a back up before running it (it will prompt you) to get rid of all the "Floating Files" that are no use anymore, definitly close down any program running in the background and read the OCing guides listed in this forum, they are a big help.

P.S. as these guys will tell you, the X300 is a pretty crap card, ur 6800 should blow it out of the water. Good Luck and have fun tweaking it to get the most out of your card

Betafrog you are right, by the time I remember my sistem was out, there wasnt any 3dmark06.. so maybe thats the reason

I check my fans (just outside) with a bright white LCD and they seem to be almost clear of dust, which amaze me cause Ive being using this lappy for more than a year now.

Its pretty sad that Pentium M its already dead, but o well.. it happens

I will try learning how to OC my videocard safely, maybe that will let my system live for one more year

Chezouff: I scan my system monthly and Ive clear most of the spywares, "most" cause you never know..

AndyM:I live in a tropical country so my temps will eventually get higher than yours, Im trying to take apart my lappy to reach the fans but still cant, but I will try again removing more screws this time

Firefighter: Thanks, I will download cclearner and check the guides

Thansk all

I don't think you are on the same year bench as h is; is that an 05 or 06 score you are quoting? I didn't think the X300 would break 1000 in 06...

Hmm, yeah it is 05, was hitting like only 700-800 before I started messing with OCing and what not, but I still think 1500+ is still pretty respectable for the X300.
