This thread is a plee for advice from anyone who would like to have an input. I have put asside a sum of money over a long period of time to treat myslef , and now i am spending it on a decent notebook . Decent in terms of money about 2500 euro +- depending. i no this post may make me sound like a total "noob" lol but i actualy am pretty lerned about note books and pc's, the main reason im posting is because i would like to spend this hard earnd money the best way possible and learn from others mistake and successes. So far Alienware has been the most appealing ,The accer ferari is another contender but after a friend has had trouble with his i mite give it a miss,I will be using the notebook for Gaming , video editing , Musik etc .
Generaly i want the fastest, newst, future proof, outstanding and most eyecatching laptop i can afford. size is not really a factor a 17" screen + would be nice .

If any one has any advice, help or input please feel free to let me no

Thanks

Also if any one can give me any details about alienware e.g afterservice.reliability.performance. their compatition i would be greatful

Can't argue with the 17" Core 2 Duo and the 7950GTX - and I like the fact that it's got the WSXGA display.

I'm very happy with my Alienware m9700, but if you're going to be doing any serious multi-tasking (assume you might, as you mention video editing)...the system suggested above (or something comparable from someone else), would be a good choice.

Ya the CTX pro mentioned abouve looks like a nice piece of kit but for some reason i am still leaning towards the aleinware . whats the batery life on the alienware like??? .Your set up shazaa looks pretty impressive i like the dual harddrives and the 2 gigs of ram . do u have dual graphics cards and what on the graphics side of thing would u recomend . the aurora m9700 is the one i have been looking at mostly and you specs are similar to what i would be thinking so any more advice you have for me let me no . One more thing , why would the m9700 not be as good at multi-tasking?? it seems to have a lot of power .

Muzy,

If you're going to pay top dollar.... On whichever brand/model laptop you get you need to wait till the Nex generation machines come out.

SANTA ROSA....

I would assume you already know, just wanted to mention it as alot of people get caught up in the moment.

If it was me, I'd go for a middle spec'd unit (read that as not top dollar - like a 1/2 deal or something, then in a year or so buy another unit that you've found a good deal on. Second machine will be light years ahead of the first machine... You'll have the first machine to sell, use as a backup.

In other words buy last generation models, you'll save money... and they will be more stable.

I've been saving up too - got a similar amount tp spend. Currently have a Dell XPS Gen 2 (since March 2005) and it has been a fantastic machine. I will be handing this on to my son and am currently looking at the Dell M1710 as front runner. My XPS2 is still a fantastic performer (3dmark03/05/06 12099/5202/2470) with a relaxed demeanour, i.e. it runs very cool (currently 42 dgrees C) and the fans rarely break into a sweat. What I like about Dell is that they are big enough (and therefore have a big enough development team) to ensure their machines are well sorted before they are released and still offer value for money. The support seems a little dodgy from reports on this and other forums but then who's isn't?

I will be hanging on for the release of VISTA end January and by that time we may see new DX10 graphics hardware. I think this is a big enough step forward to be worth waiting a couple of months for.

I've got the dual 512MB 7900GS cards in my m9700. I get 10,000+ on 3DMark05, and 5700 on 3DMark06. The 3DMark scores are definitely helped by having two graphics cards in SLI. It's no slouch by any means and is a great choice for a gaming machine. But, the Turion is the potential bottleneck because it is a single core processor (altho it handles basic mult-tasking fine). I just think someone who wants to do stuff like video editing and more serious multi-tasking would be better off with a Core 2 Duo machine.

If i had that money, i would order a MacBook Pro.

It is one of the best laptop's i have ever seen, even better than the Dell XPS!!! (in my opinion)

You can run Windows aswell, if you need it.

You better know that spec you wanting before judging to buy a high end laptop.

Currently best
2.4GHz Core 2 Duo (Fastest avaliable)
2GB DDR2 667MHz (2GB is a must have)
120GB SATA 1.5GB/s 7.2k RPM HDD (HDD size depends what you want)
7900GTX / 7950GTX / 7900GS SLI (depends on avalibility)

I think you're more looking for a desktop replacement laptop. Best performance I suggest go for Alienware 7700, but is not avaliable now. Best eyecatching would be the Alienware ALX. But atm Alienware 9700 should suits you. Anyway, definaly worth waiting for Santa Rosa.

If you're going to wait for Santa Rosa even better to wait for DX10 hardware. "A single GeForce 8800 GTX (desktop) is more powerful overall than a 7900 GTX SLI configuration and even NVIDIA's mammoth Quad SLI."
I'm quoting from AnandTech's words on the GeForce 8800 (G80) at;
http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=2870&p=29

Whether this new found performance can be successfully carried across to the mobile platform is another question but I think it's just a matter of time. Buy a 7900/7950 graphics setup now and you get a blisteringly fast graphics performance on all current games but you're buying obsolescence 6 months down the line.
