Cost?
wow sweet!

hope it doesn't cost an arm and a leg...

I'm still kinda holding out to see who will last...hd-dvd or blu-ray

-btw i forgot, but blu-ray players can't play regular dvd's right? since blu-ray discs are "thinner"
I think it will play the normal disks too... it would be pointless to release a drive that wouldnt.

Depends on what you mean by "an arm and a leg". The XPS M1710 with Blu Ray is $1,400 more than the one with the standard DVD burner...

EDIT: Sorry guys, I need to correct this: The price difference is about $400, not $1400. My apologies.

Another whole laptop cost to get BR functionality? WOW!

@Yang: wait until the combo drives (HD-DVD & BluRay) come out. There's companies already sampling dual-mode laser read heads.

Your signature rocks. I've been searching for those numbers since the release of the Wii.

Now if only they showed the handled systems, that would kick ass.

Blue Ray for $1400... NOT! they better lop a zero off that before it becomes realistic.

Nope. If you read Pirx's post above, he chopped off the leading "1".

Can this be ordered as a spare part yet for an existing e1705?

i see no point in getting a blu-ray drive.

honestly sony has likely lost that battle. ps3 was supposed to be a driving force behind the blu-ray drives but it was so late coming out that it couldnt be. not only that but the xbox 360 owns a huge part of the console marketshare and the "experts" are already calling the hd-dvd addon for the xbox360 to be one of the hottest selling toys of the holiday season.

you have to couple that with the prohibitively high cost of a blu-ray stand alone player, especially when compared against the equivalent hd-dvd players and its easy to see who will win. sony cant even really rely on the a massive sale of the ps3 to help drive up the share because they have hardly actually produced any to sell.

if i was to call it i would say hd-dvd will take the win.

edit: also according to industry rumor the wii will be released with an hd-dvd player in a few months... that makes two of the three big console makers using hd-dvd.
