xps m170 dc xeon upgrade?

Thread Starter
have recently found this cpu:

Intel Xeon DP LV 2x 2.00GHz, 2x 166MHz FSB, 2MB shared Cache, 479-pin boxed (BX80539KF20002M)

(german price comparison site)

also i read in following german forum, that this cpu isnt compatible to the intel coreduo or core2duo, but here i have a m170 with a "normal" 479 socket pentium-m 2,13... is it possible that this xeon could work with the m170 chipset?

Give it a try and let us know. I believe that would be a first for a M170. I tried to read the links but I'm no good at German.

Not possible, the XEON processor is designed for server and high end workstation class use. The M170 will only take Pentum M processors.

If my internet here were faster I would download the spec sheets for both processors and show you the differences. Though they run on the 479 pin platform, the underlying architecture is COMPLETELY different. The pin mapping on a P-M is not even close to the mapping of a XEON. Even if you could drop the CPU in the socket (which I think you can), it won't recognize the XEON CPU and more than likely burn it up (due to grounds connecting to Vss terminals and such...) lets just put it this way, it would be bad.

Better to sell the chip and make due with one of those fantastic pinmods!

do it!!! fry the thing!!! i think a xeons heat requirements would cook that little heatsink that comes with our m170's .... look how small it is...its so small it is pretty neat how it matches up perfectly with the m170's video card heatsink and they create a channel for air to be pushed out..

off topic what helps with this is electrical tape over the fan where it meets the heatsink sealing the airflow going straight out.

Yeah, that would be a rather good idea... just checked the pricing for that little baby. Looks like you could fetch a quick 500 bones for it, which would be more than enough to do a nice pinmod, or even better sell the M170 and the XEON and buy a nice M1710 out of the outlet!
