XPS M1710 Blue-Ray

Why wouldn't Dell add a second hard drive to this unit so you could run stipe raid 0 in this beast?

Chassis is not big enough for two HD's and the other highend components. It would have to be a good bit thicker.

the blu-ray drive is not in addition to the dvd burner it comes stock with. it is a replacement for it. so that means you still only have one optical drive in your machine. also you need to understand that as it sits dell is pushing the envelope for the thermal capability of the machine. all those highspec bits of gear put out alot of heat. there is too little room for and not enough thermal capacity for dell to add another hdd in addition to the parts already there.

I want a SATA RAID-5 3-disc array, SLI video, 5 GHz quad-core processor, and 10 hour battery life in a 17" widescreen notebook that's 1.5" thick and weighs 6.5 lbs.

Not very realistic, but that'd be cool!

but the optical tray will not hold up a large bottle of beer nor will it keep it perfectly chilled.

What on earth does your thread title have to do with the subject you posted about??

In any case, Dell could run RAID if they so chose to. Its not that there isn't enough room for the drives, they just have it laid out for one drive not two.. it would take just little reengineering to make two drives work... As it stands now, their notebooks already consume massive amounts of power to run. Add a second hard disk (which by the way, accounts for a LOT of your battery drain) and run them both together all the time, and its not just heat you have to worry about. I am sure they will come up with a way to make it work in the coming XPS generation, just to keep up with the Jones'es

No problem. I can never seem to have a beer long enough to have it get warm, or need something to hold it up.

But if they did also install a refrigerator pump to cool the quad-core CPU and SLI video cards, then they could run that out to cool your beer also. I'd go for that for an extra 1/2 pound of weight.
