M5550 and 9 cell battery issue.

Ok so here is my problem. I have had my M5550 for about 2 months now and it's been great! I also got a 9 cell battery which has given me no trouble. So I am playing fear with no charger and suddenly my laptop switches off. Now it will power on and come up with some writing which says I can start windows in safe mode or normally or the last known good configuration. When I try to start windows normally it shows the windows xp loading screen then shuts down. I switched batteries to my 6 cell and it works fine. Is my battery knackered? I will be pretty annoyed as this cost me a fair bit and I like the 9 cell! Is there anything I can do?

First off, how long were you playing FEAR before the laptop shut down? It sounds like maybe the battery just wore down and shut off the laptop. Have you tried recharging the battery to see if that fixes the issue?

I played it for quite a while I think the battery actually ran out of power. Should I just leave it to charge overnight? It turns off even if it has the charger plugged in.

ill leave it charging overnigth thats most likely what happend the battery ran out of power, leave it charging and try it again tomorrow but try to keep the time records to determine whats the problem or if theres even a problem

I'd call tech support.

Have you tried just putting the battery in, and plugging it in to charge overnight without trying to turn on the computer until morning?

Cheers HH I will try that tonight! It only happened just now. Appreciate it as I do not live in the US so cannot ask!

Hopefully it just drained to the point it isn't generating enough juice for the boot, and an overnight charge will fix it up...

Also, a quick note on laptop batteries. If you have your lappy plugged in, and you are not charging the battery, it is a good idea to take the battery out and just us the AC. You should only be using the battery if you do not have the AC adapter plugged into an outlet.

Thanks I will do that then (As I generally use the laptop plugged in!) Why is this?

well, most rechargable batteries are tested for a certain number of "cycles", ie: charges. So when it is plugged in, even though you aren't using it, perse, it is still on what they call a "tricle charge", where it recharges to keep it at full while it is plugged in. So it actually lessens the life of the battery. Just a nice tid bit I thought I'd throw out there.

I prefer to think of leaving the battery in as a free UPS..
Plus this discussion has been brought up many times all over the internet and nobody really has a positive answer. The vast majority of people leave the battery in the laptop and run it off AC. I haven't noticed any drop in battery time in the 1+ year I've had the battery that's currently in this 1705. Plus with the rate of tiny power outages my neighborhood has, it's a very good thing to have the battery acting as an UPS
