Help with storage extension

Hi guys,

I am totally new to hard drive related stuff. Currently I have a 80 GB 7200 rpm internal hard drive. I am currently at a few gigs. I need to get extra storage. I have noticed that there is no point bothering to get a internal hardrive ..its too expensive and I rather get a good high capacity external hard drive. I was looking on ncix.com's canada site. Can someone here please recommend me a good external hard drive around 200 GB capacity. I would hopefully like a good speed like 72k drive and so on. Once again price is again a issue...I would like something reasonabily priced as well.

cheers,

AV

This is for your 9300 right? If you want speed, you should look into a PCMCIA sata controller. Then pick up 1 (or 2) external sata enclouser(s) and a HD to toss in it.

If you just want storage, not too worried about speed, newegg.com has plenty of USB/Firewire externals.

HERE<-- are some in the $75-$100 range.

wow...that is pretty kewl. I never knew that I could use the PCMCIA slot like that. Any ideas about specific brands that I should look out for ??? I know that hard drvie vendors like western digital, segate are pretty reliable. And since the PMCIA to SATA controller should be using a regular hard drive...it actallly gives me the possibility of getting like 500 GB hard drives. wicked!!

Is there a good reliable PMCIA to SATA controller available??? What do you guys use?? I know that most of u guys here are not content with the 100 GB of laptop hard drive space

The PCMCIA slow is pretty processor-intensive to use, isn't it? Aside from that, I can't remember off-hand if it has the bandwidth to give you satisfactory performance from a hard drive.

I would think a Firewire drive / enclosure would have better throughput with lower CPU usage. Second place would be USB2.

If you like the idea of slim portability, you can get bus-powered USB2 enclosures that are made for notebook hard drives. They're about the same size as the original iPod and you can put any 2½" hard drive in it. The enclosure costs $25 at CompUSA. The brand is Norwood. I have one that works great with a Hitachi 60 GB drive. I haven't benchmarked it, but it has very good speed.

but the problem is capacity at the price. I am very strapped for money and hence I would prefer spending less than 150 or so. Thats why I am trying to find out any main stream external drives of high capacity.
