Precision M70 and 7900GS?

I did the 7800 GTX mod some time ago. It worked... altough it would shut down at times.

So I got back to my Quadro. It is very powerful anyway, more than any other laptop of the size that I am aware of.

However, now I'm thinking to upgrade to a 7900GS. Power consumption seems to be ok of the M70, so does the size of the card.

Has someone tried?

I would also be very intersted in knowing if this is possible or not. I have the 6800 Ultra in my Precision m70, the 7900 GS has the same form factor, runs faster, and takes less power which means it is probably cooler, it would be a nice step up from the 6800 and keep my temps down.

Unforunately the 7900GS is not electrically compatible with the Precision M70 (or the Inspiron 9300 or XPS 170)

I've had the 7800gtx mod in my M70 for a few months now, it works great and gives the performance that a 15.4" notebook ought to give. Too bad DTR GPUs aren't put in 15.4" notebooks anymore.

Thank you for the answer win32asmguy, I'm glad to hear that your 7800gtx is working so well for you. How do you keep your temps down? I've read how quite a few people have had trouble running that card in their m70 because it would overheat and reboot. Thank you again!

not compatible??

Sorry for the topic kick, but I was just about to buy a 7900 for my M70.

I ran into a shop that told me that it would fit. It uses the same mxm-like type slot as the 7800GTX, right?

Anybody care to enlighten me? Many thanks!

You could try it but chances are slim seeing as the 7900GS is not compatible with the M170 or 9300 either.

Hmm... It's not worth the risk/trouble I suppose... I think I'll just get a 6800 Ultra then.
