Red Hat, Q3, ATI Drivers

First, to reflect on a question asked in another thread...

...without question, Q3 plays a *lot* faster under my Linux install than under Windows, which was quite a surprise. It loads faster and runs blazingly fast. Like...125FPS @ 1600x1200 with everything notched up in vanilla Q3. Hayzeus, it's so fast and detailed it's actually hard to play.

So, notch it down to 1024 or something, you say? I can't, hence this message. As noted earlier, I am having trouble getting RH to recognize anything less than 1600x1200 with the new ATI drivers. To get Q3 to work, I had to:

-Install it all
-edit the q3config to turn off full screen
-resize Q3 to be 1600x1200
-turn on fullscreen from within Q3

Now, one would say, "Well, compare the different q3configs you've made and figure it." 'Course. The ONLY thing I could figure out is that when you change to fullscreen from within q3, it sets r_mode to 9 (vs. 6).

I know that r_mode has something to do with setting the resolution of the screen, but I can't figure out the rest.

Anyone with thoughts to add, please do.

Anyone playing Linux Urban Terror?

Check your /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file. Make sure that under your graphics card's resultion, you have all the ones you wish to run. You will see the 1600x1200. Make sure you also see the 1024, and 800, and whatever else you'd like to be able to use.

First thing I tried.

When I Ctl-Alt-+/- (also hitting the Fn key, natch), the screen blanks out. Something is happening of course, because if I hit "-" three times, have to hit "+" three times to come back to working.

I'm happy to toss up my XF86Config for people (especially to get a mostly-working version up).

i got 2 answers.....dunno which or neither...

I had a prob with q3a too. First, the resolution has nothing to do with X, as quake3 is able to change it on the fly, even if the size isn't in ya config. For example i have only in my config:
Depth 24
Modes "1400x1050"

I can still play quake3 at 640x480. If full screen at 640x480, the game will be in the lower left corner and the framebuffer will be around, displaying what ever was last in memory...ummm not nice, so window mode is better......fun thing to do by the way, 640x480 full textures and settings windowed runs a blazing 240/270 fps heheh.
The problems comes from the DGA extension. Make sure to generate the config with fglrxconfig, or make sure that you have :

SubSection "extmod"
# Option "omit xfree86-dga" # don't initialise the DGA extension
EndSubSection

As ATI provides a prop DGA extension in their drivers, the X one corrupt the ati when you full screen the game.

Second Guess, is real stupid. I noticed that my ethernet interface being configured (up), but not connected, q3a will freeze instead of starting.......ifconfig eth0 down as root is the soluce for single player not connected games.....Hope that helps.
