HELP! -- Ethernet port won't work on battery

my ethernet port won't work on battery. I've even enabled it in power saving options in the device manager.

Any idea?

I've got a dell c840

I take it your using WinXP right? Well make sure you have the same optionenabled in the DELL quickset program which has support to knock off ethernet power on battery.
