Bluetooth or USB wireless which is better

I want to hook my 1705 up to my big screen tv... I have that part working... Now what I want to do is hook the laptop up and leave it on my desk (maybe 6 feet from the TV) and work from a wireless keyboard/mouse combo. I plan to be no more than about 10 feet or so from the desk on one side of the room and the tv on the other.

So what would be the better way to go.... Bluetooth or USB wireless? I will be doing some web surfing and maybe some game playing, but nothing to streeful I dont think......

And while we are on the subject, just wondering what the heck a dongle or whatever it's called is.......

I would go with bluetooth simply because of the large number of other peripherals you could make use of (wireless headsets, PDA & mobile phone connections, etc...). A dongle is just the receiver that plugs into the USB port.

I am in the same situation and I would have to say I am not quite sure. The big first questions should be do you have a router? what band? Cordless phone? what band? etc.

I have a Linksys a/b/g running g and a 5.8ghz panasonic digital, my TV and DCT6412 cable box.

I bought the Logitech MX610 mouse (2.4ghz wireless) and granted I live in an apartment, it freaked out. I took it back.
My MS Intellimouse optical (old one) worked excellent until I got about 12 feet away which was ok for me.
Finally I got the MX5000 Bluetooth set. The keyboard is AWESOME! I can use it from my balcony (20ft) but the mouse (MX1000 BT) is about the laggiest worthless mouse I have ever used. That is unless I take my 1710 mobile to school or something. Then it works great cause it is within 3-5ft and less interference. At home I use my wired MX518 with the keyboard and im quite happy.

So moral of the story is that no one can tell you which technology to use. It all depends on what kind of interference you are going to run into if any. Personally I get more range off bluetooth than I did with my 2.4ghz keyboard (compaq p.o.s.) Bluetooth bogs down when you add too many devices too so... Trial and error I say!

I recommend the MX5000 set personally. Get one refurbed for like 50-75 bucks. I know well about the bad reviews on the unit, but they just released a new BT stack to remedy those issues and it works pretty good for me and I have a LOT of interference around me.

What you need is a presentation keyboard/mouse from Gyration. They work at various distances, depending on which model you buy.

Not cheap but if you're going to be over about 10' from your laptop it's the ticket.
