Yet another new laptop suggestion thread

Thread Starter
I've been reading through reviews and this board for about the past 2 weeks, and I'm not able to decide on what laptop would best fit my needs. So here is what I'm looking for:
  • Battery life - Want 7+ hours of real world use (office type work with wireless), not 7+ hours in standby (will settle for 5+, will go a little less if it works with an electrovaya powerpad)
  • Screen - If less than 14" XGA is fine but 14" or larger must be SXGA+ (NO WIDESCREEN)
  • CPU - 1.2 - 1.6 Pentium M
  • RAM - 1GB
  • Wifi - B is fine, b/g or a/b/g are more favorable
  • Optical - DVD or DVD/CDRW, external is fine for small form factor
  • HDD - At least 5400RPM, size doesnt matter much 40GB is more than enough
  • Size - Not real picky here, smaller than 13"x12"x2" (max my laptop bag can hold), would like something that is ~1" thick but if its a little more thats fine too
  • Weight - Max of 7lbs, need this to be something I can easily carry around all day
  • Price - Looking at max $2500 with shipping and all accessories

Those are the main things, other considerations, good tech support, turn around time - I dont want to have to wait a month+ for it to ship, build quality - no cheap plastic pos that has to be kept an inch off any surface or it will overheat (current laptop is just that), and I would prefer to keep any external buttons to an absolute minimum - like the audio dj busttons on the m6n. And of course all the standard things like modem, ethernet, usb, pcmcia and things like that.

This will mainly be used with linux doing work type activities, lots of network action. A little bit of DVD viewing and probably only a little bit of gaiming.

Thanks in advance, I hope I'm not asking for too much with my list of wants.

Anything specific in terms of video ram?

I'm no expert, I'm still looking for my own new laptop, but it really looks like you want an HP nc6000 with an extra media bay battery. I think that covers everything you need including the 7+ hours of battery life which is not easy.

I say a Toshiba Tecra M2

Oh yeah, forgot about that one... I'd prefer like an ati 9000 or 9600 with 64mb. But I'll settle for the intel extreme graphics 2 (not the original extreme graphics).

I agree. I think the HP nc6000 is the best bet to fill his stated goals.
I can't even think of anything else that comes reasonably close.
The tricky part is 7+ hours of battery life. Several of the Toshibas come close, but they do not last quite as long as the HP and typically have inferior video cards.

The 14" XGA screen kills the nc6000 for me, however, looking at the HPs the nx5000 seems a possiblity, but not sure on its graphic performance. There doesnt appear to be anything listed (or I'm blind) so that would indicate integrated graphics, but not sure if its sis or the original or extreme graphics or what... going to email HP later this morning and see if I can't find out.

Ok, well I'm blind when it comes to the nc6000 it seems, only saw the XGA listed in descriptions, but after screwing around in the configs saw the SXGA option. So yeah, the nc6000 might just do it for me, configuring now to see prices and such.

David

*EDIT*
Scratch that, the SXGA screen and a/b/g wireless put the ship date into mid April, I'd go with an IBM if I wanted to wait that long

Hi David,

Compare the battery run down times on CNET.com
The HP NC6000 is perhaps the best in class in over 5 hours of run time from a gaming-capable laptop.

Best of luck

Yeah, I saw the reviews... its so tempting, yet having to wait a month doesn't sound too appealing.

what about a t41p? coems with the extended battery, should be good for 6 hours...you can get them new on ebay for about 2500-2800 shipped

Have you looked at the new Dell Latitude D600 which offers dual battery support. Here is a review at CNet. http://reviews.cnet.com/Dell_Latitud...2.html?tag=dir

The key highlights of this notebook is:
Dual battery support
14.1 SXGA+
About 4.5 pounds maybe 0.5 more with addtional mult bay battery
Main 6 cell battery last a little over 4 hours so addtional will last at least another 2 hours
Price is great
ATI 9000

Well, ordered the NC6000, pretty much loaded. The wait is going to suck, but I'll deal, twiddle my thumbs for a month... Oh, and tax sucks. Thanks for pointing out the NC6000 for me, I'll be sure to write up a review and my experiences with it when it finally arrives.

Here are the specs on what I ordered:
  • ATI 9600 64MB
  • Intel® Pentium® M Processor 1.60GHz
  • 14.1-inch SXGA+ panel
  • 40GB SMART (5400 RPM) Hard drive
  • 1024MB (333MHz) DDR - 2 DIMM
  • MultiBay 8X DVD (RAM READ) drive
  • DualPoint (TouchPad & PointStick)
  • Primary battery (8-cell)
  • 56K v.92 modem
  • 10/100/1000 Gigabit NIC
  • 802.11a/b/g MiniPCI card
  • Integrated Bluetooth module
  • MultiBay 8-cell battery

Thanks again

David

You could always cancel and order the nc8000 with the 15" LCD if the 14" is too small. You can get a decently spec'd nc8000 for $1699 before the 8 to 10% discount you can get by using the call in order service. Buyers remorse svcks - hope I didn't give it to you. But the nc6000 sounds real nice. The 2 reasons I went with the nc8000 instead were the 128mb 9600 vram and the 15" LCD which were only available in the nc8000. Otherwise I see no reason to get the nc8000 over the nc6000. Well, maybe internal speaker quality.

I actually wanted the smaller screen, I don't want a beast of a laptop, I'm looking for something relatively small and light, which the nc6000 pretty much is, or close enough.
