Blue Screen of Death Stops Windows XP Install, Windows XP Installation Problems

Hi, I have recently acquired a Clevo-based High-Performance Laptop, and have noticed some wierd problems that ultimately made me decide to re-install the OS, in hopes of fixing the problems.

When the Laptop was purchased, at very odd times, the Blue Screen of Death would appear, usually while installing something and once while playing a video game (assumably loading a map).

I've also noticed an unusually loudness when the harddrive spins (probably not of real importance, but made me wonder..)

I grabbed two copies of (legit) Windows XP Pro and Service Pack 2 Disks, and tried to format, and reinstall windows.

Changed Boot Order
Put disk in, and ran setup
First disk wouldn't copy some files, and would give me the Blue Screen of Death on a file called setup.dd or something.

The 2nd disk (the more original XP disk) would finish the copying of files, restart the computer, and once the GUI was active and telling me it was installing, would Blue Screen of Death me again.

It repeated every time, and even after 4 seperate attempts of re-installing.

This has me believing its a hardware problem, and possibly a harddrive problem.

I'm not quite sure what to do, My initial thoughts are maybe the Harddrive is spinning wildly and the disk inside is messing up, or causing reverberations from within the laptop, and have progressed to other possible problems that I'm not sure of.

Does anyone have the expertise to help me out here? It would be GREATLY appreciated.

The specs are

3.4GHZ P4 (with HyperThreading)
2GHZ PC3200 Ram (I think)
80 GIG Toshiba Hard Drive
Matshita DVD-RW Drive

Anything else I can provide to you, I will.

Thank you very much for reading this, and your time

Do you have the user manual for that laptop? If not PM me your email address and I can forward it. I also have the service manual. This machine is very very picky about the order in which the drivers are installed. That order is listed in the manual. ALso, in BIOS you need to disable the Device 29 (All USB devices except for the bottom USB connection on the back of the laptop). Disabling Device 29 allows the O/S to be configured and written to the C HDD and not to one of the other USB devices. Also do not have any other USB device connected at time of installation (other than the external floppy). You may also need a USB External Floppy to install the O/S (Can't remember if that is only required for Raid; however, I believe that is the case).

G-Omaha has provided some excellent advice and the only thing I would add to that is that your hard drive could very well be at fault. A scratch on the XP cd can cause a BSOD error during installation as can faulty sectors on your hard drive. Memory may also be the culprit but more likely either what G-Omaha has stated or the hard drive. It may be of use to download a copy of Knoppix and burn it to cd and see if you can boot into that. If you can then very likely you hard drive is to blame. If you can't then you know that some other component of the basic sub-system is to blame. Also check your connections at the drive and mainboard. Sometimes it really is just that simple. Best of luck!

Thanks for your wisdom.

Tonight we'll be testing everything on the laptop. I was also given a diagnostic link regarding the drive.
"This link provides a diagnostic software for hitachi drives that should also work on your toshiba.
It creates a bootable floppy.
So you can test your existing drive anyway without buying a new one.

will update findings. Thank you very much! maridy

I believe that the Hitachi software just does not work with a RAID enabled 8790. Tried it a couple of times (had a bad drive and then the replaced drive became bad). If Raid is enabled, the software simply won't see the drive (or....was it the other way around - just can't remember anymore).

zac figured it out

Hello and thank you all!

zac figured it out guys ( bad sectors)
Zac had to sit and really think what would cause my Install to not work.

Zac decided, that, The Install CD Files, weren't being copied onto the Hard Disk, because the sectors were bad.

Zac decided to give it a LONG HARD Format, and give it another shot.

The Install worked

Turns out, the quick re-formats weren't doing the job effectively, and after wiping the harddrive completely and throughly, install was a breeze.

Everything is running well on the machine now and dvds work as well.
I do believe the HardDrive is going to screw up again, but now I have ample time to buy a new one for it.. It will do the job for now

Thank you for all your help guys, As always, you're a godsend

Are you saying that it can not start from the XP CD? Is this an installation CD or just an SP2 update disk? What about going into Safe Mode?
