Linux Distros and the Dell Latitude C400

Thread Starter
I am thinking of getting a cheapy laptop to program with only...I saw that the C400 seemed like a good laptop for my needs. Well, for whoever has experience with the C400 can you tell me if Fedora Core 6 works fine on it...or if Simply MEPIS works fine?

Fedora should work OK. As would Mempis.

i would say NEITHER.... the latest release of mepis is suffering a HUGE memory leak, so an older cheapo laptop with 256/512mb ram will suffer massively. FC6 also wasn't exactly "optimized" for performance so once again suffering is to be expected...not to mention the iffy reviews of the distro.

in your case i would actually highly recommend Xubuntu or Elive... Xubuntu will be simpler to get going, but elive will be fancier and faster if you're willing to put forth just a tad more effort into configuration. otherwise Zenwalk is also a popular favorite....

I just put Fedora Core 6 on a old Compaq Armada earlier today. It ran pretty well. That thing only had a PIII at 1.2ghz and 256mb of RAM.

Try Elive out and tell us what your thoughts are on it. E17 was designed with smaller machines in mind when it was written as well as fancy larger ones, so it might make a good fit. Not to mention that distro comes with a very nice arrangement of software for a general desktop. Plus being a live CD, you can pop it in and test it out, keep in mind though that reading from a CD, and reading from a HD make a huge difference in performance.

I've got a c600, i've4 got the live cd of the development elive in and its working fine.. I cant find my pcmcia wireless card right now, so i'm not sure if it will work. If I find it I'll pop it in and see if it will work.

Hey I have two c400's right now very happily running Vector ... they were dragging a bit with anything larger than that, but Vector (XFCE) works great.

try out Ubuntu or Gentoo, those are both nice and easily set up. Also Gentoo can eb customized to be very minimal on resources. Good luck sir
