cpu idle high!! what to do?

hey all i tried a earlier post and to no avail! my cpu usage does not seem to fall below 33% at all times. this wasnt a problem before as when i first got my lappy i defragged, removed hd acessing, spywared, removed all bloat, registry cleaned etc. for a while it would be nice and low in the 4to6 percent. Im pretty bummed cuz i beleive its affecting my performance all around. i know there is that dual core windows ref fix out there but should i have to do that now and why would i encounter this prob now?? any help would be appreciated!!

I don't know about the dual core stuff, but what processes are running to eat up 33% of your cpu? Is it one specific process, or a thousand of them?

well I have machine running pretty lean already with very few startup programs, but I noticed when looking at cpu that crss.exe I believe keeps showing activity. I know this is a vital prgm for windows and can be disguised as a virus but I ran norton, spybot, and spysweeper and it did not detect any probs. other than system this is what's showing activity during idle ....ill check again too.

If a crucial system file is eating up more than it should its signs that you might in fact have a hardware problem. You can usually confirm this by recreating the issue in safemode. Safemode harbors the OS from MOST offensive spyware, malware, badly installed programs and whatnot. If the same issue is exhibited in safemode its likely hardware such as overheating or a failing HDD.

oh no! the lappy is brand new! come to think of it it has occasional startup issues where it won't boot. I will try the safe mode and see what happens meantime is there any utility the might be able to determine the problem?

Nothing I can think of. If it were memory related you could give Memtest a run but it doesnt seem so sinc eyour not getting BSOD. Try using the Dell built in Diagnostic and let that run (will take 2-4 hours from start on thorough mode) Restart the machine hit F12 and run diagnostic partition.

thx for your help so far machina! well the good news is I ran it in safe mode and the cpu had no activity whatsoever..nice and low...I will run that test tonight..do u think it might be nhc? I know some users have had probs with it.

It could be. What ever is the problem its software YOU put on the machine if the same problem doesnt occur in safemode. Try to break down one at a time hat could be casuing it. Uninstalling NHC would be a good start. What we know for sure is that a format will fix it for sure.

ok so i think i got it!! i started to stop services on startup from the lappy and just took a good long look at that seemed to be eating all these resources. At first i thought csrss.exe was the problem but this was legit as it was not picked up as spyware. Then i noticed that nvsvc32.exe was constantly using memory and it would not setlle. I downloaded security task manager and it logs all activity and whats eating up what resources.lol and behold it was nvsvc.exe at a constant 21 percent or so. IT is logged as nvidia driver helper service, version 84.63. once i terminate the process the cpu goes where it should.....no activity, everything runs smoother and faster. So is this a necessary process as i ran my games after terminating and they ran fine or is just a virus in disguise and how would i erase it permanently as i tried in msconfig. thanks again machina for all your help!!!!!

No problem glad to help. nvsvc32.exe is a help file thats apart of the older detonator driver set which is required only if you intend to use the additional features of the driver package but will NOT be required to use for daily use in games videos and such. So basically dont worry about it and also it wouldnt hurt to update your driver set to a more recent 9x.xx series driver.

One of my preffered sites for updating graphics drivers. Try using the 93 series drivers that is WHQL certified. You have to also download the associated INF file.
