Check out that thread - turns out my lilnux install was using only 16 MB of the graphics cards memory - once the tweak was applied all my games looked and ran better. The difference in RTCW ET was unbelievable.

Cool find, Bratag! I'll see if I have the problem when I have a chance to boot my Gentoo.

Have a good night.

I checked out mine yesterday. It shows no errors, and the correct 128M, but I'm not using the fb in the kernel either.

I think that there's something wrong with the mtrr code in the ati drivers. (I don't know; I didn't write them.) But when the graphics card is initialized, the driver is supposed to set up the mtrr correctly. When I use DRI or a framebuffer console, my mtrr is correctly initialized at 128M, and it's only the ati drivers that give me overlapping issues that I have to correct manually.

Indeed thats true - the problem does lie with the ati drivers - if I didnt use 3d I would purely use the vesa dri drivers ... but I cannot kick my RTCW habit

Wonder if there's a fundamental difference in the 5680 vs my 5670. I get no overlap at all. I'm running the 3.2.8 drivers. How about you guys.

Its possible - the error could also be related to the drivers with the 2.6.x kernel.
