5960 Tx2 cooler

In anticipation of my soon to be arriving 5960 (wednesday according to UPS)I went ahead and made up a cooler to fit it. I took 2 targus chill mats attached and wired them together then epoxied some metal pieces to it for support. My metal cutting skills arent all that great and I still have a little touchup work to do on it but here it is.

and my favorite pic, waiting for the epoxy to set

The 5960, thats the one with the 20inch screen? Nice job on the home made cooler there, can't wait for the write up on the lappy

wow very nicely done!

Interesting. But, after you get it, befoire we get the inevitable "I built a super laptop cooler for my portable desktop (cuz that puppy ain't not laptop), but it's not making it any cooler!"thread, make sure it does what it is supposed to.

That beast has 8 vents on the bottom, and one large vent on the back. Which way are the fans blowing on that contraption? Which way are they blowing on the laptop?

You may be doing some fan flipping.

Note, I am not bashing you--that was a nice job. I am actually more curious as to how the cooling system on that the 5960 works.

thats what im waiting to see too, ive been using a chill mat on my old laptop for over a year and it makes a huge difference on it, at least as far as how often the laptop internal fans kick on. and i could have made one out of cardboard, but wanted something a little more portable

i set it up so that i can open the cooler up if needed and reverse the wireing to have them push instead of pull. the reason i chose these is their foot print in the way i set it up is only about half an inch shorter than the laptop on all sides, i have it setup to exhaust out of both sides, could have hacked it to get it blowing out one side only, but didnt feel it was worth the effort.

now all i need to find is a good motherboard monitoring utility to check the temps and ill let you know the results

Received the laptop last night, it is massive. Already have an issue with it, light i leaking from around the edges of the screen- really bad in the upper left corner. So i wont do a full review until i hear back from sager on whether i can fix it or if i have to send it back.
here is a pic with my m6809 on it for a size comparison

and here is a pic of the light leak

Wow that is horrible! I hope this isn't going to be an issue with this particular model. I would find it hard to believe due to the crowd this is made for they would let a flaw like that slip by if it is due to design. Gamers and enthusiasts will never tolerate leakage like that. It made my eyes hurt from here lol. I would count on Sager fixing it straight away for you though. They are normally really good about things like this. If it doesn't work out I bet one of those nice SLI 19 inchers would do you great

this is already the 20 inch SLI model

Oh bummer. Well a 5760 with a port replicator and a nice 20 inch widescreen desktop monitor then do with the 17" while out and about or on the road That would be a great excuse to buy all the extra hardware and get all those shiny new boxes

Zoramac, I had the same problem from my hypersonic model, (AX9 - aka 5950) leaking from the left side, but was able to fix it by just running my fingers across it until it even itself out. At first I thought it was a lost cause and I would have to send it back, but once I was done I had it looking great. I even took pictures of it before and after the leakage just so I could see the difference. I ended up returning the AX9 because the AX20 - aka NP5960 had just came out and I was still in my 7 days. Do to ship on the 27th so I'll give a status if it comes with a problem screen. I know you said you won't be reviewing it but if possible could you still run 3dmark05 or 06? I am really curious on the numbers with the turion x2. Thanks if you can.

Zormac, I am simply shocked at the look of your brand new 5950 screen. Where was the quality control???? Can't these people who sell these lappys simply turn it on and spot a problem like that. From what I gathered from your posts, it wasn't a long wait for you to get it (as compared to AW). If the oversight was due to rushing it out--then I say sloooooow down, and do it right. Which reseller did you get it from? I really hope its an easy thing to correct-meaning you don't have to return it.

Hey Jascias, I am also looking into getting an AX20 from hypersonic, probably after the christmas bills and taxes are paid-read June 07. Hopefully by then santa rosa, dx10, 8800 Go, and other goodies maybe available. It would really be great to read what you think of the Ax20, build quailty, paint job etc. If you do a review where will you post it here, or over in the hypersonic reviews.

Good hunting
Happy Holidays

Well Hypersonic has really been really helpful. I was worried from ordering from them at first but the AX9 model came on time and packaged very well. Build quality is excellent, no comparsion. It does get hot on the right side of the keyboard tho, but that is to be expected on this kind of system. I did have the same light leakage as Zormac but after the screen warmed up for awhile and after smoothing the screen with my fingers from left to right, I had very little leakage. I am very picky about screens so if I couldn't have fixed it that day the computer would have been on its way back. Since my screen leakage looked just like Zormac's hopefully he can fix it the same way. On the review I thought I should post it here as " NP 5860 aka AX20 Review " since here it would most likely help more people decide if this is something they would want.

i did manage to get a 3d05 to run, it scored in the 9300 area. seems a bit low for dual 9750gtxs, so im hoping its the cpu that is limiting it, and will upgrade to a tl-60 when they are available (or hopefully amd will come out with a faster model - although i dont know what thier roadmap is for this processor line)

Definitely sending back though, sager saw the pics and immediatly issued an rma. but i have also been having hardware issues with the nic, i keep getting the error that the cable is disconnected, so i would have to uninstall the nic and reinstall it after every reboot sometimes 2 or 3 times to get it working. at first i thought it was my load (already had a copy of windows that wasn't being used so i used my own instead of purchasing thru sager) but after reloading it twice, trying every driver i could find (disk, sager and clevos web sites) its still doing the same thing. wireless isnt any better, tried getting it working last night, it will make the connection to the router, but will not pull an ip address. ive tried everything with that as well, aside from manually assigning an ip. thinking maybe return as a lemon and talk to hypersonic (cant beat thier deal on the extended warranty)

Sorry to hear the notebook is acting up that way, hopefully if you get a fix or replacement quickly. Yeah that is pretty low for the 9750 GTX cards. Did you have the cards set for SLI and 3dmark05 set to default when you ran it? What X2 cpu do you have?

just ran 3dmark06 and scored 6500ish. the proc is the tl-56, and as far as the cards running in sli, i checked the box to run in sli mode in the display properties but other than that how can you tell, every place other than device manager just shows 1 vid card.

If you can check the SLI box then you have 2 cards, if you didn't it would just be grayed out. I talked to sager and it is normal to show up as one card. Thats actually a good score for 3dmark06. I don't know what is going on with 3dmark05 , on default settings I hit 10,750 just out of the box. Could just have been a bad run considering your high score for 3dmark06 or also could just be the drivers. Give it a restart and give it one more go. I'll see if I can located the nivida drivers I was using, or at least tell you the driver number, as these worked really well for me.

Sorry so long for an update, sent the laptop back to sager earlier this week and just waiting for the replacement to arrive. The guys at Sager have been great so far in this. Aside from their quality assurance slacking on checking the first display im completely satisfied so far. hopefully i'll be able to do up a review next weekend

Good to hear. I myself receive my system on the 2nd of Jan. Planning a review also.
