ram

this might sound stupid but, my 8887 isn't booting up and sager tech support told me to switch the ram into a different slot, however i can't seem to remove the ram from its current slot without fear of breaking it. Does anybody know the safe and easy way to remove the ram and install it into a different slot?

Did the computer worked before with that same SO-DIMM module or did you upgraded the RAM? - There are just two RAM slots on these machines. How much RAM (one or two SO-DIMM modules...) do you/or they have installed? Which brand is labeled on the RAM module and what specs?

If you are going to replace the module be careful and make sure you are not statically charged, since RAM modules are always a little bit sensitive!

Do you have the owner's manual, if so, it describes the removal method.

What RAM do you have now? One or two sticks?

If you have only one stick, it has to be in the primary slot, I believe that's the one to the left.

First of all, as krobotikin noted, make sure you are grounded to the machine and not statically charged. Best thing to do is touch some metal part on the exterior of the machine after first touching some grounded object in your house (lamp, etc).

I assume you know how to get to the RAM, but if not, there are two small tabs at the top of the keyboard you press in and the keyboard will release. Carefully put it to the front face down. Try to not strain the cable connection. Then there are three screws to remove the heat-shield.

On either side of the slots there is a small tab at the base of the slot, gently pull these out and away (towards the front and back) from the slot, just a little. You have to do them simultaneously. The stick should pop up and be ready to be removed. Again, make sure you are grounded. Gently pull the stick out.

Putting it back in, angle the stick at about 30 degrees from horizontal and gentley insert it until it clicks in, then push the outside edge down until it locks.

Reassemble the machine.

Remember to disconnect the AC power and remove the battery. Sometimes some people forget this before they fry a machine.

Did you figure out how to remove it? I had the same problem with my 8887. I wasn't able to boot, it would freeze while loading XP, or when it did boot sometimes, it would quickly blue screen. I also wasn't able to boot in my linux partition.

I swapped the ram in the slots and it seems fine so far (3 days). I have two 512's.

Is there any diagnostic tools for Sagers? Any way to test the ram?
