Acer Aspire 5102 Freezing :(

Hey. I have been having this problem since I got the laptop and I am hoping someone here can help. I got the Media Center Aspire and depending on obviously what mood it is in it freezes up whenever it feels like it. Usually if I leave it on overnight it freezes within an hour or less. I checked the event viewer and it didn't report any errors that I could see and I've gotten all the drivers I could find. Not sure what else to do so if I someone i out there help please! Thanks

This is due to the buggy Bios that Acer makes.

Maybe this fixed in bios 2.6, download it and try it out.

Where can I download BIOS v2.6? On Acer's site, when I select the 5100 series it redirects to the 3100 series page and offers only BIOS 2.00... I tried looking around at other series, but never located. 2.6.

Thanks.

I got the 2.6 BIOS and it didn't fix my problem but I took out a stick of Corsair ValueRAM and replaced it with some crucial and other then one blue screen which I don't understand, it seems to have worked.

Great - Downloaded and installed 2.72. All is well. Thank you

As Arabian suggested try the update to 2.72. I just installed it without problems. I have heard that the Acer notebooks are real picky about ram so you problem could still be the chip you installed. I would check several ram web sites and see what ram chips they recomend. Good luck.

hmm which crucial did you get? i also have some corsair, so there may be a compatability issue there...if you could give me your specific model, that would be sweet. thanks. and the bios 2.72 does seem to be working well, inasfar as it hasn't caused any other problems ; )

i'm having this same exact problem. I just copied this from notebookereview.com

hi, i'm new here, but need some desperate help. I have a new Acer aspire 5102 wlmi, only like 3 months old. Got it back in November. Suddenly last night, when I went to reboot my computer, the computer wont start up.

It will get past the Acer splash screen, then when the Windows XP splash screen comes up, the blue bar that is moving, it will stop and the computer really freeze.

Now since i've been turning the laptop on and off via power switch, it comes up to the screen giving choices of rather to boot it from safe mode, last good known configure, start windows normally, etc etc. When I choose to start up with any of the 3 safe mode options when it scans all the files, it will stop at

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS\system32\DRIVERS\agpCPQ.sys

it'll just be stuck and frozen on that

but when when i choose to start with Last known good configuration, or start windows normally; it might or might not get past the Windows XP splash screen. But if it does, it will come to the blue check disk screen.

When it counts down from 10 seconds to 0 giving the time frame to deside rather to skip the check disk or not, it will freeze at 8 seconds if you don't press any button. But then if you do press a button before it freezes at 8 seconds, then it will continue on for a split second; getting rid of the count down and show one period (dot) showing the time waiting to go through normal start up.

get what i mean by one period/dot. how when it loads or it goes . . . . . .

"dot dot dot dot dot"

I tried starting up with the acer recoveory disk that I made when I first initially started up my laptop when I bought it. But when it loads the first recovery disk, it will freeze while it says, "Please Wait ..."

what the hell can I do

again it's a Acer Aspire 5102 wlmi laptop, that was purchased back in November 2006. So it's brand new for the most part.

i was searching around and read that, if it was plugged into an AC power source, drain the battery? no... sure if that'll work, but i'm trying that right now. It's stuck on the XP splash screen, so i'm just leaving my computer on, as well as my laptop cooler fans going to help drain out the battery faster.

But the power cable is plugged into the same socket in my room where I "ALWAYS" plug it into... never had any problem until this weekend.

How exactly would I be able to install the new bios off from a cd, when i boot from CD?

That means Windows is getting stuck trying to load an AGP driver. Now, I don't know if MCE even has that driver to load, but I did a search for it on my XP Pro SP2 system, and it's not there. And I have the same laptop, but I don't have your issues. So it's possible Windows is fuxored looking for a video driver that doesn't exist. Because that's what's happening on boot. It looks for the drivers it needs to boot. Now, if you have an XP install disk, you could try to boot off it and choose Repair, and try to install that driver manually off it or off a jumpdrive.

That sounds like crap to me.

Well, assuming you've downloaded the new bios to a different computer, and the bios is going to fix the problem, which some posters assert is true: I can't recall if you have to burn in ISO9660 Mode1 or not, but burn the unzipped CW51272 bios files onto a blank CD- specifically the phlash16, the bat file, the new bios rom, and maybe the readme too. Put it in the reader- make SURE you're on AC power, not battery, then go into the existing bios- F2, and change the boot order so the CD/DVD Reader/Burner boots first. It may be a Matshita on your machine. Doesn't matter, as long as you can tell the difference between that and the Hard drive in the boot order. Reboot out of the bios, let the bootable cd do it's thing, and see if that solves it. Keep in mind that flashing a bios can be a brickable offense. Alternatively, you might just get that XP install disk and do a fresh install. Not a format, unless you don't have anything you need to save off it. If you do format, you can blow away the Acer 5 gig restore partition, since it's obviously not doing you any good, create 2 partitions, and install fresh. Then you can flash the bios from the Windows gui.

Bios in Acer 5102 WLMi

What does bios upgrade fix? In the past I have encountered problems on other machines when I did upgrades and remember the advice not to upgrade unless you know you have a problem that the upgrade might fix. I have same model of Acer bought in September 2007 and have not upgraded bios or graphics or anything. Only problem I had with freezing was when I made mistake of trying out the Norton CD that Acer sent along. Had to do a factory restore to get rid of it so it would even boot up again and run. Usually I run Linux on it from an external hard drive and wonder if bios or other upgrades would help improve performance. Is it easy to roll back a bios upgrade on this Acer if it makes things worse?

What RAM works well in Acer 5102?

I am considering going from 1 GB to 2 GB ram but wonder what brands work best. What kind of ram comes in these machines or is certified by Acer to work. A couple memory web sites say they have memory for about $100 a GB that they guarantee to work in this model but don't tell you any thing about the brand or other technical specs.

I had the exact same problem. my laptop is an aspire 5100 bought on dec 9, 2006, I've tried flashing bios to the ver. 2.83 start the recovery disk, safe mode, last known config, etc. I've even tried the power flush for 20 minutes, and still the same problem. Did you solve this? I sent an email to Acer Tech Support and still no answer.

any news on this thread? Today I send my laptop to Acer, see what happens next..
sorry, i totally lost touch with this board.

yeah i sent my 5102wlmi to acer back in...march? got it back in early april. What happened was my USB ports were fried some how. Since I got the laptop back in Black-Friday sale, it was under warentee. So Acer had to give me a new mobo, pop, bam, good to go. Got it back, everything was how it was, all my files, nothing changed.

only thing was, it was a bitch waiting during that time, cause i NEEDED my laptop for classes and had ALL of my papers/docs and research on it. ... eh, pulled through it though.

I also have an Acer 5102 bought in late January 2007. I had problems for several months with the CD/DVD drive. Performance was very inconsistent. After several calls to Acer Tech Supp., they finally asked me to send it in to the factory.

They replaced the CD drive and everything works great again. Could your problem be the CD drive?
