NP5320 - 2nd bad motherboard

I've owned an NP5320 for almost exactly a year. Last month, the computer was shipped off for the 2nd time in less than a year because of a dead motherboard. I'm thinking I have either a lemon, or the basic computer and design were bad, which is why Sager discontinued it after less than a year of production. (Several other models are still in production that were older). I'm now thinking of unloading it, since the warranty is expired and I need it for work traveling. (An older Sager I have is going strong after nearly four years! Had to have it sent to me in Miami when the 5320 died.)

Have many of you had the same experience of dying motherboards on this model?

I have a 5320, it had a dieing motherboard after about 5 months. But that wasnt due to any problem on the computers part. It had a fight with my little brother

My experience with this computer has been nothing but good. It performs very well and has survived quite a bit. However, I only know of one other person whos had this model as long as us, thats Chaz. He doesnt hang out here much though. But his experience was a very good one like mine. He didnt have a little brother to kill it though, so his computer didnt die.

I'm not sure of Sagers reason for discontinuing the model, but I figured it had something to do with the advent of Core Duo's and they've stopped selling 15.4" gaming machines in general.

Thanks for the thoughts. Maybe it's just mine -- a lemon. It is/was one of the few notebooks available with a 15.4" WUXGA screen -- a huge plus for me. I just can't afford to have the computer die again when I'm on location. I like the machine -- it seems pretty fast and able to crunch through large images fairly easily and quickly, but I have to consider reliability. I'm thinking of jumping ship and getting a new Acer Ferrari. I tried one a year ago, but sent it back because the screen was crappy compared to the Sager. Now WSXGA+ seems about the best you can get.

I know this is an old thread, but I think my motherboard is dying on me now. Just recently replaced the dc-jack and thought everything was fine, but it comes on when it feels like, then goes off and when you turn it on, the frond clock and screen won't come on while the computer seems to be loading up.

And of course, the warranty's out! So anyone know how much the fix would cost. Is there something less than a MB change that can fix the problem? Am reasonably techie, so a simple plug/unplug, soldering, etc. shouldn't be a problem.

Thank you for the help. And yeah, I have had it for over a year and a half. The dc-jack started faltering at the turn of the year, and went out around March. Had the laptop sitting, till I finally had time to get a replacement jack from Sager (could not find the exact part online, and they sent me one that was available online, and asked me to use the old outside casing!!), was glad to see the laptop boot up and all, but this is just frustrating now.

Sounds like another motherboard failure. You'll have to talk to sager for price quotes. I dont know them offhand.

Just spoke to Sager Tech. Its $400 for the motherboard, $80 labor and $$ shipping. Oh, and of course they don't sell the motherboard, so I HAVE to send it in if I need it repaired. So it would probably set me back over $500 that I don't have. Life sucks.

Anyone got a spare 5320 motherboard lying around ??

I've had the exact same problem with my NP5320C (Clevo M56A backbone), originally sold Oct 2005 by Powernotebooks.com, we bought it a month later on eBay. First failure (fails to POST) occurred in March 2006 while we were overseas, shipped back to Sager Midern in April, they replaced the motherboard under warranty (would not say more specifically what the failure was due to - I asked! Second similar-symptoms failure occurred after the warranty had expired in early 2007. Remove-and-replace CPU, video module actually restored its operation for awhile (r&r memory modules and/or SATA hard drive had no such effect) but soon failed again for good. machine has been gathering dust since then. Sager wants $400 plus labor and shipping to replace mb again. I've been looking for an alternative source for a pulled/OEM motherboard to try to restore it locally -- any ideas? Many people raved about the NP5230C when it came out, I can only wonder if it is a "lemon" design. Sager wouldn't offer an extended warranty on it themselves. Any ideas? :-(
