Unlocked Nvidia-Dell Video BIOS! Overclock your 17inch notebook Videocards! - Page 2

nice work....although I cant use it...I'm running Vista, and the nVidia Control Panel still isn't all there, including the frequency settings....bummer...

Does this hack support manipulating voltages via software as well (I don't think you can do this in cool bits but I haven't fully explored all the options in ATI tool)? Or would we need to alter the rom file if we wanted to change/downclock the voltage? I'm very excited about this.

EDIT** Nevermind, if I use the "memory optimized" rom then the latency issues that prohibit the 7900 GS from hitting high memory clocks become nonexistant and the voltage is still at 1 V.

Hi,

Before I make mistakes, can I use these GTX bioses on a 7900GS?

Thanks;

yes

Good Job on unlocking the vbios..

Now the question is who's card/systems going to first die first .. Not to be the downer to the this good news but there are reasons the locks are in the vbios.

Now back to the celebrating.

Enjoy!

yeah....I'm thinking I'll keep mine at stock clocks and dig this thread up if my system ever feels too held back I dunno, for me I don't see a real reason to jack up the clocks especially when the 7900GS is a great card in the first place. To each his own

Considering that Dell is the only company that locks out clockspeed via the BIOS, I am not really too concerned. Now you can overclock it just like any other 'normal' graphics adapter. Besides that, I have overclocked EVERY video card I have ever owned. Never once have I had one fail due to my overclocking carelessness. Dell locks out those features for two main reasons, one is that they can make a whole lot more money by selling a 7900GS and a 7900GTX. Stock GTX speeds alone are enough to convince most people that they would need that card to game the best on... Take away the BIOS lock and your customers will realize that all they need to do is overclock the hell out of the low end card to acheive the same results as buying the ridiculously expensive upgrade...

Number 2 would be of course to prevent heat related failures. These things don't have much room to breathe as it is, and pumping the clockspeeds up will of course change the heating pattern significantly. Of course, most people that are willing to overclock their card in the first place already know to keep an eye on temperatures.

I say just go for it. If anything, you can easily flash back later if you so choose to want the restrictions back. No biggie really, but if you like to tweak then why not? I mean the fact that I was able to gain an additional 1200 points in 3dMark06 shows that these things are severely hampered by the low specs Dell ships them with...

completely agree with you.

When I extract the ISO file to a CD, do I just extract it directly and burn it? I tried doing that on my 1705 and when I reboot and select to boot from the disc drive, it just goes straight into windows. What am I doing wrong?

You need to use a program like Nero or Alcohol 120%

Then choose 'Burn Image' and point it to the .iso file

No need to extract anything.

Actually there is more that heat concerns. Heats is the biggest issue. Then there are EMI and power concerns. Then the actual components (resistor, caps etc.) that are affected by the excess heat and emi. Don't get me wrong changing the GPU/memory clock isn't that big of a deal it when you start playing with the timing and power that you start getting into big trouble. The reason other vendors like Clevo box's are set up so you can OC them is because they you off the shelf part and are not subject to the same regulatory issue as a Dell.

He was in no way trying to say that Juanlu did a bad job, I think his point was simply that people are going to essentially misuse it by pushing their clocks so far it will wear the card. Such as, even though I may not be using these personally because I don't feel the need, I still respect the hard work he put into working on this so that we could have a convenience. Don't take it as disrespect

ok, So I have release the OC guides and bench mark from all cards from the 7800 and up. With all them I have start the same type of warnings about OC'ing. I could care less if you find my statement disrespectful. All i'm stating is the truth. As for juanlu making thing easier for me not really (for others for sure). As I said and Good work. I said nothing to disrespect juanlu work.

i know you didnt mean it, but after speaking with juanlu, he found this statement rather disrespectful

"Now the question is who's card/systems going to first die first .."

With that you are just scaring people on using his bios, and therefore mistreating his work...

If it was not you intention to disrespect him i will tell him next time i see him online.

Now do you think will this work for the 7950?
lol i know people will get greedy and may lock their cards or may end up getting BSODS, but noone is gonna fry their cardss, noone fried one useing our ancient method.
Ok for the rest of us that don't know what this means (me). What does this mean. How does/can this benefit me? Break it down in slllloww motion.lol
