Presario V5303NR w/Bad memory??

Thread Starter
Hello,

I recently purchased a Compaq Presario V5303NR laptop which seemingly is a great laptop. Feature wise, it's everything I asked for and design wise, I love the design of the case and layout of everything. However when I powered it on for the first time last evening, I went to the my computer property page and saw it showed 787mhz and 384mb of ram. Considering this is an AMD Turion64 cpu, I figured the 787mhz is down from the 1800mhz due to the speedstep/power saving technology, correct?

Secondly but most importantly, it only showed 384mb of ram. The laptop was advertised and supposedly sold with 512mb memory. So I opened the memory slot area on the bottom and pulled out the memory stick. Sure enough it has 512mb labeled on the sticker on the memory stick. So I them stuck in the memtester x86+ CD I have and it's only picking up on the 384MB ram as well. The BIOS only shows that too.

Any thoughts or ideas here? If I have to contact Compaq right off the bat, I wouldn't mind swapping out the memory stick if they are capable or willing of sending me the stick and letting me send the other one back? Otherwise as I've started to get data on it, I'd rather swap out a working 512mb stick from my Toshiba laptop instead.

You do have 512mb of ram, but you must have a 128mb shared video card. Your video card 'shares' 128mb's of your system ram.

(start > run > dxdiag > display, 128mb video card right?)

not sure about the MHz thing though :/

The Mhz thing is right. Do something to get the cpu going (open a big program or do a virus scan, etc) and you should see it step up to full speed then.

.

Above is normal.... memory is shared..... CPU speed varies....
