Extension warranty needed?

Hi,

I am new here. I just bought a Toshiba Satellite A105-S4344 from amazon.com. I know if I puchase this at a computer store or Best Buy, they will always try to sell you extension warranty. Since I bought this through amazon.com, they didn't have that option. Do I need to buy extension warranty on a laptop? I have been using my PC at home for a long time, computer isn't a new thing for me but this is my 1st laptop. What do you all think? If I should buy it, any online site recommedation. Thanks in advance.

I always get the warrenty on laptops and it has paid for itself everytime. Being carted around all the time does some damage on them and its nice to have the warrenty to fall back on when something goes wrong.

Depends, if its going to be stationary most of the time, and not moved around alot, then probably not.
If you will be carrying it everywhere you go then it would be a good idea to get some insurance.
Plus, it helps when you decide to sell the laptop. A laptop with a warranty has a better chance of being sold than one without.

it really depends on several factors,
  • price of the warranty (most 3 year warranties are around $300 so anything under that is a pretty decent price)
  • length of the warranty (some warranties like for apple, have a standard 90 day warranty, so it might be worth it to buy at least a 1 year warranty)
  • what the warranty offers (accidental coverage, dead pixels, on site etc...)
  • who is offering the warranty (if it's a 3rd party expect horrible support)
  • your previous experiences with laptop repairs (if your laptops tend to break down, then you'll be more likely to purchase the extended warranty, if you have no problems with your laptops, then the extended warranty probably isn't worth it to you)
  • what type of laptop you are going to buy(some parts for desktop replacements are worth more than the warranty itself, screens and motherboards are $400-$800 for the parts alone, which means not including labor)

Hi all, thanks for the replies. I found out Toshiba has their own warranty plans online to purchase, and the prices are pretty reasonable, I think I will get one from them. Thanks.

I would say thats a good idea. My HP has broken 7 times!! Thankfully I have a 3 year global business warranty, so they have repaired it for free every time. If I had to pay for it myself, it would have cost me almost as much as the computer. Its always hard to add that "useless" $300 smackers to the price and maybe bump specs, but, IMO, it is definitely worth it.
