So Im flying home tomorrow...and I usually carry my laptop with me in my backpack, but I wont be using the 17" behemoth anytime im at the airport or on the plane so I was wondering if it would be safe for me to just leave it in my checked luggage...locked of course but the TSA would still have access to it...should I just put in in the middle layers of my clothing?

NO!
DO NOT CHECK YOUR LAPTOP!
There are ways to do it namely checking it in the same container as a firearm that will make sure it makes it out the other side but other then that I would never check my laptop.
So far the TSA/Airlines have "lost" my Digtal Camara, Surefire Flashlight, and Leather jacket.

Definitely. I was also wondering if there is some kind of limitation going on right now... Can I carry (normal) items on the carry-on baggage? I remember seeing such a thing some month ago, after those problems on England (some liquids as weapons, don't remember)...
I'm going to US again in late January. Everything is normal right now, isn't it?

Do not check your laptop, ESPECIALLY if you are flying through Atlanta -- that city (and airport) have about the highest density of criminals you are likely to find in the USA.
Carry it in your backpack. If it doesn't get stolen, it may well get damaged, and good luck getting compensation for it.

i just few yesterday from LAS (Vegas) to ORD (Chicago) and the 3-oz rule still applied. while waiting in line for security i was sipping on a 6-oz bottle of water and was told to get rid of it... also took my laptop with me in my carry on...but i actually used it on the flight (till the battery died) playing AOE2 :-p

I was lucky...recently flew from Sydney Australia to Florida...2 laptops and 2 digital cameras in our checked baggage and it all made it through. Note...I would only recommend doing this if you are not going to freak if your stuff disappears. In our case, we were each carrying our current notebooks, and did not want to hassle with more than one through the x-ray line.
Point is...TSA allows notebooks to be packed in checked baggage, but you definitely take a risk of it being stolen.
