I assume you are installing the distro... or just using the live disc? If it's the later why not just try ubuntu or elive? You'll prolly have to go to a more specific forums for that distro to get compiling instructions.

Well i have the 6400 (e1505) and the best distro for my laptop was ubuntu 6.10.

Mandriva: Video Card Error
Gentoo: Video Card Error
Ubuntu: WORKS!

I gotta tell ya, if you are getting a video card error in Gentoo, there is something wrong that you should be fixing

How are you not able to get to the terminal? If you booted from a minimal install disk and it didn't work you can always use a different live cd to jumpstart things. Otherwise you are booted from the minimal install disc straight into the terminal from step one and stay there until you set up X, and since most video cards support VESA at the least, you should be having absolutely no problem booting even on the Gentoo minimal install CD.

Back on topic, lol, if you are having trouble configuring straight Slack, but still want a Slack-distro, give Vector a try. Vector is my second fav distro, behind the *buntu's, and it's probably the fastest damned binary distro I've used (even gives Source Mage and Gentoo a run).

Plus, it has great hardware detection, and a good ncurses install (no need to edit the initrc files and whatnot yourself).

Basically, it's slack without the headache of editing config files.

I've been periodically reading about Arch, and will probably give it a try at some point. I really need to setup a dual boot on my laptop though... I keep nuking distros to try new things, so my laptop is constantly in a state of flux as to what's actually running on it

Case in point: tried Blag again last night, and it's the first .rpm distro I've used in a long time I'm actually pretty impressed by (mostly I think because it still lets me use apt).

I'm also going to give FreeBSD a try again I think (I know, I'm a traitor lol).
