Gateway 505 and a 7200RPM drive?

Hey Guys,

Has anyone put a new 7200 RPM drive into the 505XL? I'm looking for an increase in speed but I'm worried about the increase in noise, battery life and heat.. can anyone comment on their experience with a faster drive?

Thanks.. just wondering,

oops i have another question.. can u only use DVD R- media with the DVD burner?
and about how long would it take to copy a DVD with the burner in the XL?

Thanks. JR.

I put in the hitachi 7200rpm hard drive and I havnt really noticed any increase in noise or heat. However, things are definately running a lot faster in terms of starting up. Windows boots faster, Outlook opens almost instantly. So for me it was definately worth the investment.

And yep, only dvd-r's work with the dvd burner. It takes me around 20 minutes to burn a whole dvd. I think the most consistant deal on dvd-r's are the ritek 50 packs at newegg.

edit: does anyone know where to get a good 7200RPM drive that's reasonably quiet for the 505?

You said it yourself: newegg. Since there are only two major notebook HD manufacturers, and only one of them makes a 7200RPM drive, it's not like there's a choice. If you want a 7200, 60GB drive, you'll have to get the Hitachi...

...not that that's a bad thing. The drive is noticeably faster than anything else, and is worth it IMHO.

I just bought one about two weeks ago. Checking the site today, though, it's apparently sold out.

ok thanks, sounds good.
Do you find that it is actually a good increase in speed? but not a significant increase in heat and noise

Thanks,

A definite increase in speed. In another thread I noted that it took about 14.5 minutes to install XP Pro. There's no perceivable, additional heat or noise in my M6805...

One person at work installed a 7200 RPM drive in a M505XL. As others stated above, there have been no problems and the speed improvement is noticeable. Battery life does not appear to be changed for him.

Like me, he chose to keep the original drive and is using it in a USB drive case when at home

bcpeng,

this is interesting. if you put in a new hard drive, does it effect any of gateway's warranties?

thanks

i'm sure u could just switch back the original if u have to return it.. thus not voiding it

I'm not sure how it affects the warranty. I'm guessing if the hard drive breaks, I'll have to go through hitachi to get that replaced, but I didnt mess with the rest of the computer or do anything weird (the hard drives real easy to take out and probably meant to be changed if u want it to be). I got mine through zipzoomfly (formerly googlegear) so you can try them too.
