Black Ice

Anyone else get an email with an obscure reference to dell adding "Black Ice" to their lineup? I wonder if it's going to be watercooling, some kind of phase change (probably not....), or just a new piano-key black paint for the case....

Thoughts? Rumors? Actual info?

Sorry if there's already tons of threads on this... I didn't see any

I'll put in a vote for water cooling since that is something gamers want, but Dell is pretty much the only one not offering it. *that wants to be considered one of the top gaming companies*

Blakc Ice is a firewall program. I tried it once & was not impreseed.

Yes, although Black Ice is a firewall program and something found on the roads I don't think either of these is what Dell is offering...

I'd go with phase-change or watercooling (although if it is the latter they are bigging themselves up a bit much with the description).

Just saw this on their site lol. Wow...some hint it's phase change but that sounds a bit too far fetched. Liquid cooling stolen from AW, and then tweaked for the entire system sounds about right. I'm about to change my sig so it says "Powered by Yellow Ice, exclusively from your next door Asian"

Interesting.

Find it strange they would use the 7800s though.

hmm... efficient and high tech... Phase change and peltierare the things that come to mind for high tech, but aren't efficient...

Water is pretty effecient, but not particularly high tech.

I wonder what that leaves....

Complete immersion in fluorinert? that's high tech and efficient.... absurdly expensive though....

My vote is that its the successor to the Dell XPS 710. Its just a next generation desktop XPS system.

Could be but I think it would be something bigger...phase change, TEC, or water cooling but I think it is a water cooled setup. I can see phase change and one of those unreliable tech sites rumored phase change but i don't see dell's R&D creating a phase change unit they can support indefaintely. There are inherenent issues in phase change technology and isn't really "bulletproof" for the regular Joe who buys the fastest Dell on the block with this type of cooling. Even experienced phase change users had issues such as maintaining the compressor, keeping condensation out of the block and CPU, etc....TEC is a possiblibity but HARDER to upkeep and support on a broad consumer level Dell wants to do it under unless they create a specialized support team JUST for this unit and this unit only; might even need to create an on-site team/contractors just to diagnose problems with it. Water cooling is probably the easiest to support on and off site not to mention the safest out of the three cooling methods that everyone is suggesting. There is ONE more possiblity and that lies in a very slim, TEC (maybe phase change, not sure) unit that can be fit inside a case just for the CPU. It was released earlier this year around mid summer/early fall and seemed like it had a promising future. Forgot the name of it. It retailed for around 300-500 from what I recall but like I said I'm not 100% sure. If anyone can find the link for this product or if I find it I'll post it on here.

We'll see when they officially unveil it...

EDIT:
found what i was looking for..this is that slim, all in one TEC/peliter unit I was talking about earlier...

could be next best thing to the water cooling that Dell might introduce...

black ice is a firewall program... old and busted. for the paranoid.

I think we have already concluded that Dell's "exclusive technology, like you've never seen it" isn't the Black Ice firewall program of yesteryear...

that would be cool. but watercooling for notebooks would be awesome with the new levels of heat output expected with quadcore and go8800gtx.

but 1 question. reliability. seeing a notebook is manipulated in many ways that a desktop is not, would watercooling be reliable in a situation like this. example would be a hose leak, etc. due to a lot of moving. Warranty would care for stuff like this, but getting coolant in my hard drive would REALLY turn me off.

Yeah, I think heatpipes are going to be as technologically advanced as we are going to get for a while. Like you say watercooling probably wouldn't be the most robust solution, especially when miniaturised to fit in a notebook (if a system of that size is even any use)...

The link has nothing to do with notebooks

ahhhh si.... Maybe it has something to do with freon injected cooling system like an air conditioner.. that would be cool... (pun intended)

hmmm.... I want to research this one now...

Lets please keep on topic here, for the 6th time we're not talking about a form of software regardless if it's a firewall or IDS...ROFL

stop it with the fire wall!!

all this talk about video cards and stuff. i am all for the newest video cards but what is the most demanding game on the market right now? splintercell double agent or something? that game has some of the best graphics ive seen in a game and my m1710 7950gtx can run that game at 173 fps on max settings. my point... what kind of graphics can they throw at us athat wont beable to be handled by today's top graphics cards?
