I have Sennheiser HD280 Pros and they are excellent. I had a pair of Grados, good sound, but the bass is not as good as the Senns, and wearing Grados for more than 1/2 hour is a form of torture. Unfamiliar with AKGs.

I have the Bose noice canceling. The sound is great and the comfort sets the standard. They are a lifesaver on planes too. $299 isn't cheap, but it's worth it.

Those are great noise cancelling 'phones (my parents have a set each), but the Sennheiser HD 280 Pros have better overall sound quality (just not noise cancelling - though they are over-ear headphones and loud, so they do a decent job at that anyway). So depends on what you want... of you want pure sound, go with Senns, if you want noise cancelling, get the Bose. Often what people don't realize is that the differences between a lot of these products are only noticeable side-by-side. So go with the ones that look or are the most comfortable and the best value.

thanks..i guess.. but i am really not about to go over $100 on this purchase...i am trying to keep in that ballpark and going $300 for the BOSE is ugh...tripple my budget?

The Senns are one of the better buys you will find for the money ABF. I actually use them for my monitoring phones, both live and in my mixdown in studio on occasion. After a couple of years of my treatment, which can be pretty rough, I had to gaff the plastic on the headband so it would hopefully stop cracking as it was starting to do, but other than that haven't had any problem.

just in time the senns showed up on amazon for $85 + free shipping so i figured i wasn't gonna get a better deal than that... i hope you're right seablade.

If you already pulled the trigger on the Senns, I'll just shut up... if not, I'll give my opinion...

I recommend these phones:

My brother got a pair and they sound amazing for the price. It's over budget, but worth it if you can shell out a few extra $$. They actually hold up pretty well to my $1,000 UE10pros.

Beyerdynamic makes some decent headphones, especially for the price, and actually they are the only ones thus far that make a surround sound monitoring set I might actually consider as they are the only ones that have invested in the hardware processing that MIGHT make it worthwhile, though at $3k a pair I think I will pass for a bit.

I've heard a lot of good things about Sennheiser (dont know if I spelled that right). Great quality in some of their higher end models!

I dunno, my friends hopped on a few sennheiser deals a little while back and both of theirs broke by 8-10 months. I believe they snagged the HD280's which do have more bending parts, but I dont know.

I recommend the Grado SR-80's, the sound quality is awesome. However its open-ear, and can take some getting used to on the ears (or get the SR-60 pads off of Amazon - they fit).

I'd say stick with what you have now, and you have a warranty, and see if you like them. It's to each his own, so they may be perfect for you.

Sennheisers have great sound quality, some of the best for the price. However, the build quality is not quite as good as some other companies, mostly because most of their headphones are made of plastic with no metal support. At least they are not as breakable as Icemat Siberias.

LOL SO TRUE. haha, Icemats break like there's no tomorrow... Cant tell you how fast I've seen people go through those...

I've had mine for over a year and have had no problems not breaking it. And I carry it around in my laptop bag with me all the time..

props, because I've seen a lot of them break... if you just torque them a tiny bit (as in move one earcup off an ear) they seem to snap... or two pairs that i've seen...
