Bloatware removal from new Dells

post #1 of 14

Just got my M1710 (T7600G and 7950 GTX)[/b] in the build pipe and awaiting delivery.
Many sites differ on opinion on what has GOT TO GO!
No, I'm not gonna worry about doing a re-format and new OS install but would like to query what you folks have punted AT MINIMUM on receiving your new clamshells.
I don't need;
MCAFEE 7.0,OEM,ENG,90DAY,DIM/INSP
AOL 9.0 ,FI,ENGLISH CANADA

But what about;
ISP SEARCH ASST PORTAL,DIM/INSP ?

Any others you would sugget punting immediately?
Also not too worried about doing a registry sweep afterwards (right now anyway, maybe a month or two from now).

Thanks

My favorite thing to remove first it the Dell Support Tool. It's extremely annoying.

Not sure why you wouldn't want to reformat, Sharguild. Reformatting and and reinstalling Windows would be the easiest and probably the quickest way to clean up your machine. Also, if you simply uninstall AOL and McAfee, you'll have remnants of each program lingering until you clean your registry.

One other method of cleaning which may help is Dell Decrapifier, which you can Google. I've never used the program, but have read that others have had good luck getting rid of the preinstalled junk with it.

I've heard getting the Dell Direct Media Player on the 1710 working again (without the Windows boot-up) after re-formatting is a pain in the ass so not ready to tiddle with it right now.
Thanks for the Decrapifier heads up, heard of it before. Got some reading to do on that I guess.

Dell makes a program you can run (you can download it from their download site) that will restore functionality to Media Direct if you reformat. I've done it and it's quick and painless.

Like others have said, it's MUCH (can't emphasize that point enough) easier to reinstall Windows than remove all of Dell's crap.

Sigh, yeah it's probably the best to do. Will wait a week to see if the clam passes my torture tests first though.

I really have to get around to a reformat as well, first I said as soon as I got my 7900GS I would do it, now I'm saying next time I want to install a program...and I know that running 56 processes is just ridiculous, even though I don't really have a problem with it since my new E1705 can really handle anything I throw at it

Wow, 56? LOL. I've got mine running at 30 processes including i8kfanGUI, AVG Anti-Virus, and QuickSet. My desktop sits purdy at 23 processes, LOL.

If you reformat make sure that you have a DVD decoder on cd as I had real difficulty getting a cd backup of power dvd from Dell.
They provided me with OS (winXP media center) drivers dvd burning software and media direct but no dvd player!

there's a utility to fix this, it's so easy to get it working again.

reformat with a clean os is the best advice.

Yep, when I get my M1705 next week, befor eI even play with it I will format it and load my XP Pro on it. Every Dell I have ever worked on (litterally thousands) have all had this problem. I do so wish Dell would cut this crap out.
