I've heard that there's a new technology called EWT that can eliminates the need for a backlight in notebook screens thereby increasing battery life many many times, and you can see the screen in all lighting conditions - ie outside ! . The company is called liquavista but I don't know when these screens are out. Anyone know anything about this?

I believe what you are reffering to is Electrowetting. IT will likely be a few years before you see Electrowetting in anything like a laptop screen. If even at all.

I see this being changed and morphed into a differant technology all together.

yes, originally i read this technology to be a new nanotube based display. This was about 10yrs ago when I first read about it and I have followed it semi-closely. It will remove the need for a backlight, there will be no more "viewing angle" problems, and you can use them well in daylight. I am going to read your link and see what they have to say now.
But... with this new technology and the new flash hard drives, I can see battery life skyrocketing soon. Oh did I mention the fuel cell technology they are coming out with too... I heard 1-2 weeks on a single charge. yay!
*edit* this is a different technology all together... interesting to see where they go with it. We use a similar "wetting" technique in my press machines and I can see this possibly being very good!

What do you mean by this Viriiguy?
I think EWT is a must for laptops. It means you can code or watch dvds etc outside in bright sunlight. It will have a huge effect on how people use laptops, where they take them etc. DVD picnics etc !!
I've written to Dell etc asking them if they are in touch with liquavista to make this work but no reply. I read the liquavista CEO said that EWT in laptops may be a possibility in 5 years.
One other thing. A lot of office workers complain of eyestrain - from staring at a backlight all day. This is a solution to that problem and it also reduces a companys energy costs by eliminating the need for all these backlights. I think liquavista are going to be massive in the next few years and EWT will revolutionise Cell Phone Displays, Laptop Displays and PC monitors.

here is one link to the nanotube displays I was talking about... seems they have made great leaps and strides since I first read the inventors notes almost 10 yrs ago... Looks like a potential fight is on our hands unless they save the nanotubes for the larger screens...
and darqhelmet, im sorry if my sexiness offends (or turns on)... muahhahahhahha!
here is the linky:

I think liquavista will prevail for a couple of reasons. Companies have spent millions on the LCD manufacturing process and liquavista's EWT technology integrates easily into the LCD manufacturing process ( only about 5% different I have heard) Major manufacturing companies will not be prepared to throw away this investment. Secondly, does NED work in bright sunlight ? EWT displays ( just link paper) are perfect in full sunlight, and that is truly revolutionary.
