what is the best use laptop to buy ?

Hi every one and Merry Xmas!

I am new here and have a question ...What would be the best used laptops that you would recomend ? I want to buy several with OS installed for my Co workers up north on camp job I was looking at getting IBM 600x models or other IBM laptops like the t20 etc ..they will be used mostly for internet surfing with high speed modem in each room ..I just wonder if you all think IBM is a good choice ?? I want to get them all the same so I can offer some services like changing a hard drive etc and keep it simple ..I have been seeing refurbished IBM units on ebay for under 300.00 ..these usually have P3 and minimal ram and hardrive with 14 inch screens ..and usually windows 98, 2000 or xp installed and are tested to work somewhat .. these are usually 2 or three years old and thats what Im looking at getting. I think this will snowball and I will have trouble supplying enough of them, again thats why I thought the IBMs would be a good choice because there seems to be a lot of them for sale ..is that because they are junk?..
hers some other brands I am looking at.. Dell cpx, Toshiba 8100, Compaq m700, Sony Vaio HP omnibookk xe2..
Thanks in advance for any advice! ..I hope to make a decision in the next week and buy several to take up north with me for my Crews in the Oil Field.. For most of us up there, having an internet connection is a life line to the world as we only get out once a month or so ..

thanks in advance for any opinions or Idias and have a safe and happy holiday season !

i think the ibm T2x series would be a great choice...granted i am a tad bit bias here since i own a T23 (14.1" 1024x768, 1gb pc133, 40gb 5400rpm, 24xcd/8xcd-rw/8xdvd-rom, p3 1133mhz)... so far it has been proven itself as a very worthy office machine (i primarily use it for internet and office work)... but even some light gaming (AOE2) it does quite well. The buld quality of course...is what IBM is famous for so you can't go wrong there either. As with the guts... the Thinkpads are actually surprisingly easy to tinker with so i don't think you'll have many issues offering support there.

then again....maybe its just my T23 talking.

by t2x i meant the entire ibm t20something line (x = any number between 0 and 9)... t23 being one of them (there is also t21, t22...etc). i believe t21 is a tad cheaper than the 23...comes with a 700mhz, 22 has a 866 or a 1ghz not quite sure...but somewhere around there... t24+ are starting to get more advanced there.

the older Dells....they will be cheap because the market is flooded with them, but on the downside they are built pretty poorly (even teh Latitutde models).

HP/Compaqs.... might be worth looking at, but i doubt you'll get a better deal than with IBM... quality will also be quite a bit lower.

The one thing I have always loved about the IBM line is that they feel rock solid. Excellent builds. Dont know much about the long term reliability, but compared to my dell it feels like a sherman tank.

I don't think so. I have a IBM T22 and a Compaq Armada M700. Their configuration are almost same: 1GHz, FSB 100, 14".

* IBM T22 1GHz:

Pro:
- Good sound.

Cons:
- Hard drive (20GHz) is very noisy.
- S3 GPU: slow, gloomy color.
- Slow speed due to RAM runs at CAS 3.

* Armada M700 1GHz:

Pro:
- ATI GPU: fast, good color.
- Fast speed due to RAM runs at CAS 2.
- Lighter than T22

Cons:
- Bad sound.

I had the Armada M700 some years ago. Because I heard a lot of praise of Thinkpad, such as "rock", "best quality"..., I bought the T22 and got a bitter disappointment.

your little pro/con chart compares performance related features...not build quality. and i am sorry you found your t22 noisy, because my T23 with a 1133mhz P3, and a 5400rpm Toshiba hdd is pretty quiet. I find the build quality to be outstanding...granted not quite up to Toughbook standards, but good enough. The only "flaw" in construction that i found is some slight flex on the upper-left region of the keyboard..which again is pretty minor and more of a design flaw than construction quality flaw.

A noisey HDD has nothing to do with the puter.
