Plus I don't like what they did with the touchpad buttons, how they sink down in instead of click. Unless they were just trying to eliminate the clicking sound they make when you push them. Maybe it's just me.

I somewhat agree with this statement, I got my e1705 by replacing the 9300. At first I thought the touchpad sucked, but I remembered how much I hated the extremely loud click noise from the 9300 touchpad. I hate the new power button compared to the 9300, but that's just a minor detail, and yes the plastic is different, but I'm not sure if it's cheaper, just much different. As for the subwoofer, I got the same exact one, so it may not be a "true" subwoofer, but at least it's the same as the 9300 (which was quite good in my opinion).
I still think the white border is not of the best quality, I think Dell will definately make some improvements for the new Vista laptops. Maybe a black border option? Or maybe they will go with something slick like the Asus laptops, which are the best laptops looking around IMHO, but for the price you can't beat Dell's performance.
/end rant.
