5680v won't power up

Hey everyone,

This is the first time I am really having a problem with my Sager. It fell a few weeks back (my 1 year old son decided he wanted to play with it!), but it only broke the PCMCIA slot. Everything else was working like normal. However, for the past week, it will light up with the "Plugged in" and "Battery" lights, but when I hit the power button, the nothing happens to the laptop and the LEDs turn off.

I have to unplug the computer and then replug it back in to see the LEDs light up again. I tried to see if the DJ front panel would still work and it works fine. I took the entire mobo out and nothing seemed to be wrong with it.

Any ideas? Also, I'm thinking that since it fell, the mobo got messed up. If that's the case, does anyone know anywhere I can pick up a used mobo? I called Sager and they want $500+ to fix it.

Sounds like the DC/DC board, a daughter card on the motherboard gone south.

Check EBAY and the FOR SALE forum under the general category. Even if you find an old one, send the person an email--they may still have the parts laying in a drawer.

Would the DC/DC board detach from the mobo or would I be looking for the entire mobo?

On this model, it is seperate. Whether you can find one is another matter.

I had a very similar problem today with my 5320-V, I opened it up and re set the RAM and is now working. The thing is that Im very worried about this being a more serious issue since I have no way of sending it to sager if it keeps failing (I live in Chile). Any suggestions?

that is very interesting---it makes sense that burning out your ram would crap ou your computer, but it is very rare that RAM burns out...and yet you've had it happen multiple times.

Question: These 500p laptops were specd at 2.5 volt ram, but most ram I found when I was looking was 2.6 volt...which have you been using?

I have two bad sticks that I happen to still have sitting around. They are labeld as APacer 512MB PC2100 CL2 266Mhz 2.5V memory. They are the memory that came with the Sagers. I would say that these 4 Sagers have burnt out 5 similar memory sticks over the years. All with the same symptoms. I should mention that of the 4 systems I only have one D500P (the other three are older 5600 series), but I can't say for sure that that D500P system has had this problem. I know that the other three have had the problem, but I don't remember pulling apart the D500P to replace its memory. It is most definitly the most stable of the four systems.

interesting....I had a beast of a time getting memory that would work in the d500p (anything with 2.6volts was unstable or a complete non-worker), but I do not know the specs on the 5600p

As I said, I can understand why frying the memory would cause the laptop to shutdown, but I cannot quite figure out what is going on with the way you guys have described it (sometimes on, sometimes off).

Very odd behavior...
