First time poster. Anyways, my laptop will not fully charge the battery. When the AC adapter is plugged in the "lightning" symbol will occasionally alternate between off (not charging) and on (charging). The battery's power (indicated by % when I mouse over the battery icon in the tray) will gradually decrease, despite the AC adapter being plugged in. The battery power will also decrease when the laptop is off, such that a fully charged battery will lose power in less than a week if the laptop hasn't been used.
Now, before you say it's a faulty/old battery that no longer holds a charge, this battery is about 18 months old. This battery will charge and operate normally in my brother's Compaq laptop (not sure of the model number, but it's the same style case as mine, except it's a 14"). His battery (10 months old) won't charge in my laptop, and will also lose battery power despite AC being plugged in.
The only thing I can think of is something inside the laptop broke/wore out. The nearest Compaq Authorized Service center (Fry's Electronics) wants $90 just to "open it up"! A local electronics repair shop will diagnose it for $35/hour, but I think they specialize more in consumer electronics (TVs, radios, VCRs, CD players) than computers.
