Softmod : Change Chiptype from 7900 to 7950

for Graphics adapter identification choose “Custom”

check “Use ROM straps for PCI Device ID….”

In the Drop Down Menu --> choose “0297 (unknown device)”

click Apply then Restart

1. Install DELL driver version 92.77 (other versions are also possible) and Restart

- or -

2. Open Device Manager right-click „Display Adapter” & click Update Driver

3 . Select Install from a List, or specific……….

4. Select Dont search , I will choose……………

Uncheck „Show Compatible Hardware“

5 . Find and select from the list 7950 GTX, and install

so this makes our 7900 into a 7950? Aren't they two different cards?

Gen2, I think you need to go into WAY more detail bout your findings before anyone will try this potential madness!!!! Great find if legit, but us as fellow insane genius' will need to read more of your 'research'. I understand where/how you modded and I will say that a driver change is capable of giving a 30-50 point change in 3DMark. But so will me wiping my 1710's butt with a good 2 ply not to mention my avatar's (maybe 10 ply for that!).

Not to flame (i promise) what would be your point of doing this mod other than the 30-50pt gain and recognization as a 7950? Will this allow us to flash the TRUE 7950 bios at this point? My experience says no, but if so, that would be GOLD to alot of people around here....

More info please!

read that site above and it seems that Nvidia has fallen off the boat a bit on their driver release expectations....

Doesn't the 7900gtx and 7950gtx have the same number of pipelines? If so, you're not softmodding anything, just changing a label.

On the other hand, if you really are unlocking pipelines, then it really is a softmod.

More info on this would be good. Does it mean one can get better performance or is it just changing the name of the card?

so is there any improvement in performance? what if i have a 7900GS? (does the GSX bios mod improve anything but the clock speed?)
the gsx bios mod took my 3dmark05 score from the 6000's to 9500. Now I call that a performance increase!

Is it possible to make the 7900GTX show as a quadro so u can use the TRUELIFE function in Solidworks ??

No performance increase at all with this mod, but I now can install the newest mobileforce drivers by GeForceTony without getting BSoD and it seems it is due to this mod, cause when my card was labeled as a 7900GTX I wasn't able to do this without getting BSoD

Hey Fire,

What driver version you liking nowadays? Thinking about going to 9x.xx series finally.
I'm running this driver -> XTreme-G MobileForce XP 97.44 G3, which you can find here.

As I mentioned, I wasn't able to install them unless I changed the label from my 7900 to 7950, don't ask me why, cause I have no clue *lol*

The driver improved my score in 3DMark05 from 10,684 to 10,738 and in 06 from 5,934 to 5,957 (hoping to get the 6k someday ), I'm running my card @ 625/725, but I think I'll oc the core a little bit more

Thanks a bunch I will give these a shot tonight.

Once the T7600G is affordable your goal will be easy

Overclocking the 7900 is strange for sure. You get within 50 points of your goal and you bump it a little more expecting it to make it only to find your scores drop.

I found my best overclocks with some strange core and memory numbers
post #16 of 21
Yeah the BSOD with some drivers is if you are booting OC'ed with the nvidia control panel. If for example u boot with Riva Tuner overclocking your card then it is fine.

No need for a T7600G ... I did it I don't know how to explain it to myself, but I'm now able to clock my card @ 650/770 by using rivatuner, before using rivatuner and doing oc via the nv controlpanel I was only able to go to 635/735 and I'm still testing how far I could go (have to do the AS5 Mod before, to achieve lower temps)... So here they are, my new scores: 3DMark05 3DMark06
post #18 of 21
Firestarter what are you using to test your stability on the video card those are pretty high clocks?
I'm running 3DMark in loops (minimum 3 times) if I see artifacts or freezes, I know that the clocks are to high, I don't take Ati tool cause it even gave me artifacts and error by using 600/700, but I never saw artifacts in games or something...
So firestarter u say u were only able to go to 635/735. So when u OC'ed with the nv control panel at above 635/735 you would just freeze or artifact in 3dmark? With rivatuner not?

Also to make sure..softmodding to the 7950 couldn't have helped right?
