Cannot install winxp on my new 8790-blue screen on setup

I just recieved my new 8790 today. I seem to have run into a problem. When installing windows xp i get to the part where it looks at your disk partitions and then when i try to proceed i get this blue expection error screen. Before the blue screen it shows 4 unrecognized partions. But soon as i try to delete one the rig crashes. I thought that perhaps i need to load the raid drivers (i only have 1 40 gb hdd tho) but i have no floppy drive to do this with. Can i disable raid if thats the problem? Do i HAVE to buy a floppy drive to install the raid drivers although i have only 1 HDD to install windows? Thanks!

Have you got in contact with PC Torque yet? I'm sure that they should be able to help you with your problems and queries.

But if i'm not mistaken, then I believe that maybe you might need drivers for the RAID controller even if you only have 1 hard drive because that drive could well be connected to the RAID controller. So for winxp to recognise the drive, it needs to be able to detect the RAID controller, on which the hard drive is connected to.

Anyways try and give them a call if you do have further problems.

Sau, I believe that the physical connection of the HDD is the same for RAID and non-RAID. It is the DIP switches which are used to control which of the two controller logics with be employed. I'd try making sure that the 7-ib-1 device is disable in BIOS while Windows is being installed. The after everything is OK, turn it back on and let Windows find the new hardware and install it. I think that the 7-in-1 is called something like "USB Device 29??"; however, am not sure.

Yes that seems to be the case, I believe that Device 29 is the card reader.

So from your information, both the intel and promise RAID chipsets are both being used?
TBH i don't think it was really necessary to have both, since under xp you can set up raid in software if you like. It doesn't need a special controller like the promise fast trakk to perform the raid functions, all it means is that a few extra cpu cycles are used to split the data. And on a 3ghz processor, i'd hardly see that being a problem.

I also understand that the physical connectors are the same for RAID or non RAID. Its just that i didn't know whether Sager has decided to abandon the IDE controller of the Intel chipset in favour of the Promise one. So I'm not sure if there is a physical connection of the IDE ports to that controller. Hence my advice on the RAID driver being needed for even 1 HD operation.

But if your information is correct. Then all is necessary for people of 1 HD, is to switch (using the Dip switches) to non-RAID mode and then proceed to install win xp. When asked to press F6, you can safely ignore that and continue, since xp has intel HD controller support built in.

Sorry back to Valkrien questions,

If you don't need raid, disable it. And yes you won't need a floppy drive to install windows xp, as the raid drivers are not needed.

Definitely set the two dip switches between the two drive bays to OFF, and as Gary suggested, disable the USB device in BIOS or your 7-in-1 reader will show up as device letters C-G, with your hard drive ending up with an H drive letter (been there, done that, RTFM after the fact and said "doh".)

Once XP is installed, turn USB back on, leave the RAID switches off unless you really have two drives in RAID configuration.

This is caused by the 7 in 1 card reader. Go into the bios and disable the USB connection 1,2,3 ( it is one option I think on the first menu in the bios) The owners manual details it out. Your also going to need a USB floppy that will plug into the bottom rear USB port (it is the only one that will still be enabled once you change the bios) to load the Raid drive during the setup (Make sure you hit F6. I kept forgetting) But check the manual I think it's chapter 7 if I remember correctly.

Sorry, I didn't read all of the posts. I didn't mean to regurate the same stuff.

Thanks! Disabling those dip switches did indeed allow me to complete the installation. I didnt see the post about the 6 in 1 reader tho in time and it installed xp on the h: and i now see 5 drive assignments in windows. Oh well, better than nothing i suppose. Im just happy to have it up and running. THanks for all the help!

Have you tried enabling the switches after XP was installed? I had the same issue as you (with XP install crashing) and fixed it the exact same way.
However, I have not tried to enable the raid and was wondering what would happen.

Wireless setup is not as fun as one would hope for.

Mine worked right off the bat. Well, it WOULD have, if I had remembered to apply my changes to my router when I added the 8790's wi-fi MAC Address to the allowed access list. Doh! I was messing with this thing for two hours before i checked the router one final time and saw that my changes were never saved.
