Dim screen fault

I bought an M1710 with a dodgy screen, basically some lines down the side from a company dealing with Dell customer returns. I immediately got a replacement screen for it, in fact i got a couple and they both work great but the problem is they're always jammed on the lowest brightness level.

This is exactly the same with old faulty screen so i figured that perhaps there was another problem.

I fitted an X1400 to the laptop and all of a sudden the brightness works again...

This makes me think the graphics card is at fault, because i put back and get the same fault.

The 7900GTX works perfectly on an external screen (you can even do dual desktop with the laptop LCD unplugged!), but does anyone have a clue what the problem is?

I was wondering if a BIOS flash might help? I doubt it myself but just maybe...

If not I might just convert the thing into a desktop and sell off a load of bits i don't need like the LCD, plastics and battery...could even use a 3.5" desktop SATA drive..

Oh yeah, i also got a T7400 ES, no joy with an overclock!

May wish to reinstall the 7900 cards drivers (with latest download version of course) since they might not be detected at present and also reflash bios.
Another option is try ANY other compatable card (got a friend?) and see if it is recognized.
Last option of course, a shop.

BTW; you do know that if you don't completely remove one cards drivers before installing anothers your pooched right?

It's not a driver issue as it happens as soon as you power up the laptop.

It's not the laptop BIOS as i flashed to the latest version and it doesn't work

If i put another card in it works, i figure i'll just try re-flashing it but i doubt it will work....

Sounds like the Videocards Internal DVI port is damaged or such if the problem doesnt occur on your x1400. Its a good system so if your under warranty get a replacement videocard. Maybe with luck they'll have run out of 7900GTX cards and will upgrade you to the 7950
