Geforce 7600 Go 512 MB VS Geforce 7900 GS 256MB

Which one is better for gaming? I am trying to decide between the Dell E1705 and HP DV9000t.

The 7900 GS will beat on the 7600 like nobody's business, spit on it's corpse and then procede to defile it's younger sister.

In short, 7900 > 7600 by a huge margin.

and the 7900gs overclocks nicely

also the 512mb of the 7600 is not worth the $125 hp charges as it only gives 1-5 more fps when compared to the 256mb model

from what i heard is that Nvidia 7900gs is purely a gamer video card but it will sure make the system heavier...

Obviously is a gamer card, and obviously a more powerful card will produce more heat and thus require a better heatsink to cool and make the laptop heavier. That is not the question here, the OP was interested in performance only.

I can read same as you and i know what the Q was.. I am sure everyone is entitled to his own opinion (that why forums exists) Thanks for the well intended remark though. And BTW when i said HEAVIER i didn't mean it weight wise , but performance wise.

i think the guy was confused about the memory, thinking 512 > 256 but 7900 > 7600

I would be confused too. Luckily I use the search and found these wonderful sites:

The thing I don't understand is that the 7600 is 512MB and the 7900GS is 256 MB. Doesn't a 512 MB card beat 256 MB card?

no

it reaches a bandwidth bottleneck before it reaches a memory bottleneck

it's not always about memory

Hello,

I've been a believer for a long time that more memory = better video card, however after this post and a bit of research it appears that I am a little off. So, just so I am crystal clear the values I should be looking at on this (http://www.gpureview.com/show_cards....=394&card2=409) webpage are the 'core clock' / 'memory clock' & 'fragment pipelines' / 'vertex pipelines'...in that case the 7600 has a higher 'core clock'....don't get me wrong I am NOT disputing your information, just trying to make sure I understand it correctly I am quite new to the whole vid card game as I haven't upgraded for some time.

edit: just checked out another forum and they mention that the most important values are 'shader operations' / 'pixel fill rate' / 'texture fill rate' / 'vertex operations'...

i think you should looking at gaming benchmarks instead of hardware data

some ati cards perform better in certain games than nvidia cards (like in doom3 and prey) and vice versa. nvidia has better linux support.

then some cards overclock better than others, the 7900gs o/c's like a champ and basically gives you a $400 upgrade for the cost of running a bit hotter

All other things being equal, and if its memory limited, yes. In this case they are very far from equal and in many games the extra 265 just sits there ....

Another thing you should consider is the memory bandwidth. The 7600 has a 128 bit wide memory path, while the 7900gs has 256-bit wide memory path. Confused enough?
