Totally changing an Inspiron 700M for gaming

Thread Starter
My sister has an old Inspiron 700M and i want to make that my first laptop project.

Here is my plan
Add an Intel Core 2 Duo T2500 2ghz (dual core) socket M
Take out the 512mb and exchange it for 2gbs of high end RAM
mod the case a little such as taking out the scratches, making the cooling better.

Problems i have encountered.
Can a dual core socket M cpu fit into a socket M with a single core in it currently
How do i replace it?
and what is a good laptop cooler (internal).
and this should probably be the first one,
Is this possible?

I plan on overclocking the 2ghz C2D to make it about 2.8ghz
it is said to be able to do that.

i guess that since i cna't get a high end videocard in here, i can't game on it.
so this will be all internet surfing.
so where can i get a larger harddrive?

For the RAM though, what kind of RAM will fit on the 700m but match the Core Duo?
is it DDR or DDR2??
the 700m motherboard uses 200 pin SODIMM though, i know that much

The max CPU that the 700m can take is the Pentium M 765 (2.1 GHz).... You need to get the XPS M1210 if you want a 12.1" Dell with the Duo Core CPU on it.

Hi :-)
First of...
700M is single core. No way to instally a core duo or core 2 duo

I admire your attitude, but you may be getting in over your head. First off, your
700m runs a Dothan core Pentium M processor which is not compatible with any of the dual core chips (Yonah and Memrom). You could upgrade the memory and buff out the scratches, but i get the feeling you really wanted to upgrade the processor. If you have the time and the expertise (which, no offense, you probably don't) you could always find a dell motherboard from a newer dell laptop which would fit your LCD and chassis and mod that into the case. Well I'm getting ahead of myself here, my suggestion: its not worth it unless you approach it as a DIY project and not as something that is going to be practical, fast, or economical. It would probably get you on digg or slashdot though ;-).

Even if u get the most memory and fastest cpu in there, any recent game will require a good gpu to run decent enough, something you dont have and unfortunately will never have in that machine. If you want to play cs 1.6 or quake 3 and similar games, then it will work fine. Any newer titles will run like crap on your gma900 no matter how beefy ur cpu is.

The max memory that laptop uses is 64mb of video
It will never turn into a gaming laptop unless you play 2002-1980's games.

The max graphics memory that laptop would use from the main memory is 64mb.

Lawl, no computer made in the last decade has such a limit. Even my 1996 gateway pos has 96mb of ram, so how could a less than 2 year old laptop be maxed out at 64?? I mean sure you made a mistake reading the specs, but didnt that sounds just a little fishy to you when it went through ur head/when u wrote it?

First of, this is a laptop forum, but asides that, please read. A Dell 700m is a 12inch ultra portable laptop (bulky).
Specs Here.
It uses 64mb of shared integrated memory.
No 12" inch laptop up to now can have a memory upgrade w/o upgrading the motherboard. This is not a gaming laptop. It's a basic internet, office suite, working laptop.
I wouldn't invest the money in updating it past 1gig DDR ram, unless you plan to do some photoshop.
Also, getting 800mhz out of a intel m chip is a bit over selous. Asides from that, it's pretty hard to OC these laptops. Also, something i would not recommend due to their lack of cooling.
Get the laptop sell it and get yourself a Dell M1210.
I have one of those and it's pretty sweet. Rig in Sig.
Happy New Years everyone.

They were talking about the memory of the video card.
