replacement dvd drive - pioneer slot load k06? or tray load K16?

In short:
To replace my combo dvd/cd drive,
Any opinions on slot load vs. "drop in replacement" tray load?
i.e. Pioneer K06 vs. K16. Other brands exist but Pioneer seems highly recommended
and the laptop has this originally.

In long:
In a dv1000 ( 14", intel centrino, July '05 ) laptop,
the dvd drive is flaky - cleaning did not help.

I'm faced with replacing the DVD/CD drive and 2 options appear attractive:
Pioneer is the DVD drive, I believe it is model K15.
"slot load" seems to be a popular feature .. but it would not be drop-in identical.

- K16 is the "current model" shipped by Pioneer, available for $75 - $85
It has the same "tray load" so the current faceplate / bezel should pop on it.

- K06 is identical (apparently?) except it is "slot load"
BUT WILL IT FIT ?? and, will it suffer more from dust intrustion?
At minimum, the new drive would probably be recessed, as HP (like Dell),
use their own bezel on tray loaders and it sticks out a few MM.

Slot drives will not accept 'odd' size CD/DVD disks, like the mini disks used in the PSP and by some as electronic business cards. I have one in a MAC Ti book, and it functions well (not the original drive - upgraded from owc), but the original unit did not like some colors of recording media.

They are nice in that they do not have a tray to extend, but on the other hand, should a disk get stuck, it can be a bear to remove.

Plus the loading mechanisms in slots tend to fail faster than trays do. They eat more battery than a tray. Dust really shouldnt ever be a problem unless you leave the drive open all the time- which I dont know why you would, so this really shouldnt be an issue at all.
