Macbook Pro gaming

Hey! I just sold my E1705 because I don't game MUCH any more, and I don't need the huge thing. I've been looking into a Macbook Pro, as I know I can do SOME gaming on it. I was just checking to see if anyone knew how well it would run Counter-Strike: Source at native res, and what settings it can be done on. I'd like comparisons of the 128mb vs. 256mb cards if possible.

I can't wait to see my beautiful glowing keyboard.. *Drool*

CS source and hl2 will run beautifully on both 128 and 256mb cards, however you will experience less drops in framerate with the 256mb model. Also I would advise against using any anti aliasing if you're at the native res.

Also I would suggest getting a laptop cooler if you plan on playing any 3-d games for more than a few minutes. The macbooks and macbook pros are great but they all seem to get feverishly hot. I love these units, but never have I seen a notebook reach 79-80 C so regularly when the CPU is at 100% load.

i totally agree with the top paragraph, but not at all with the bottom. sure you can buy a cooler if you want, but its totally uneccessary. i have yet to see ANY C2D notebook not get to 80c when running a cpu/gpu intensive game. These macs are the only beasts running hot. People are just used to the temps on the first gen centrino stuff, so they think the new cd/c2d are overheating.

I run HL2 and Far Cry at full everything without any problems. Yeah.....might get a bit warm sitting on the lap. But hey, its winter and its nice little heater.
I don't use a cooler.

I play wow for hours on my MBP running ati at 425/450 and never had a problem. The thing gets hot though but not over the keyboard and palm rests. Just don't touch the bezel between keyboard and screen. I think the reson it feels hotter then most notebooks is because the heat pipes on the bottom of the case are directly attached to the lower case that is aluminum. It might be using the case to dissipate more heat. CPU temps don't seam higher then most other core duo laptops.

Thanks a lot guys.. As for the temp warnings - I know all about it. I just sold my E1705 with 7900gs, that I overclocked the hell out of. REGULARLY reached 85° with that thing. It was like a space heater.

Anyway, ordered a 256mb config.. With priority overnight/saturday delivery. Should be here in about 8 hours!!! I can't wait. But I'm going to have to.. I have work at 10:00

Apple uses FedEx and they generally deliver early in the morning especially with the overnights.

HL2 does well on the MBP. Its not on the level of the NV7800/7900 in terms of performance, but it does well enough to be playable.

i'm assuming you guys are talking about running these games in bootcamp?? if hl2 is compatible with mac i will be stoked.

No luck with Hl2 and osx

If only we could bring the gaming community into the mac environment there would be no windows

I have the 128mb version and I'm honestly kinda regretting not springing for the 256. I've since upgraded the HD to 160GB and ram to 2GB but I still wish I had the 256

tell you the truth, the 256 is not that much better. of course it IS better, but by how much? not enough to me

so dont feel too bad

I can easily run Counter Strike Source (in Windows XP) with everything on max settings at 1440x900, and still have plenty of FPS to spare. It also runs Call of Duty 2 Mac Edition fantastic at native res with everything on medium-high (no AA though). It looks amazing!!

As you can see I have the "low end" MBP (kinda ridiculous referring to those specs as low end :P) and its fantastic!! The only thing it needs now is an extra gig of RAM.
