Apple Users

Hey guys... I am planning to buy a MBP but still haven't decided between the 3 available options (2.16 , 2.33 or 2.33 17")
I tend to lean more to the 2.33 processors as the 2.16 model comes with a below average video card as well as 1gig of ram.
I read that the MBP has some over heating issues and some funny sound due to some manufacturer failure which the Moco was obviously awared of. Does this problem still exist if i am planning on making a purchase now?
Any advise of what i should be aware of before making the buy ?
I also read that the 17" is very much the better one (than the 2.33 15.4") as it is more reliable (all apple are anyways but this one got the better marks) and it out performed it's brother 15.4".

Please share some experience with me before i make the purchase...

Last but not least.. how does the ATI X1600 card perform if used for some multimedia purpose and time to time gaming ? or do you recommend having it replaced with a different compatible card ?

Thank again

base config is the best bang for your buck. anything above, and well, i think its time to start looking at other options for the $

You don't need to post a question in more than one thread. Apple users also read threads in General.
well Rob, was just doing same as what an older member was advising on that same thread.

I was today at the apple stores available around here and guess what, all the MBP 17" are backordered and i will need to wait for 2 weeks + for one. Prices are also not same from one dealer to the other. the cheapest i found is around 40km from where i live and is selling it around 70$ cheaper.. he is also selling OfficeMac for over 150$ cheaper.. guess will have to go the longer way.. but the wait will be killing me...

just ask the general section mods to move it next time. i read it but couldn't move the thread since it originates outside of my section.

I am located in Switzerland.
Prices online (swiss apple site) are 150$ more expensive than from the cheapest retailer i found. Only one shop here is selling same price as online but that's as he's the official partner so he couldn't change the offers.

i am not entitled to it... I am no student

2.33 17" MBP is a good choice, its a very capable machine and since the CPUs are soldered into the motherboard, I say go for the fastest one you can afford. Hopefully they get back in stock for you.

The 17" has a bigger chassis so I would assume better heat dissipation, hence the reliability being a bit better, but thats just a guess.

there is really MINIMAL difference between the 2.16 and 2.33 . definently not enough to justify the money spent here in the states. i still say the base mbp is the best bang for your switz buck!

well, i went for the 2.33 even though the difference you mentioned is minimal but remember that the 2.16 comes with a smaller HDD, lower quality Video card and only 1 gig Rams.
Within 2 years even little more the difference between a 2.8 GHZ processor (when released) won't be huge nor remarkable to the 2.33 but sure will to the 2.16.. Spending so much money means i am not looking to own an antique within a year but still an up to date notebook.

Let me add that before making my decision for the 17" , i read quite a lot online comparison between the 2.16 and 2.33 15.4" and the 2.33 17" MBP and the 17" was the much much more reliable. weight, performance, battery, display etc.....

No problem Kgeier.. I was considering the 2.16 as well to be honest until i found out that upgrading it to same configs of the 17" or the second 15.4" with 2.33 GHZ will somehow get it in a very close price range of the others and still the video card can't be upgradable so i went 17" just to cut a long story short...
I am glad i didn't go for the HP 9000 as a friend just told me some horrible story about their displays and reliability today .

no worries. hey the first mbp 15" base had about 30 stuck/dead pixels on it.

the second one has been flawless though

then you're left an ethical quandary. i don't know how it would be in the online store over there, but here others have discussed how the online purchase does not require any verification of your student status. not so in the stores, where they ask for your student ID card. for kicks i've gone on the Canadian site, to compare the academic prices. i selected a university, punched in a completely made up number for the ID request, and i was able to check prices and whatnot without a problem. some have a problem with the idea of taking advantage of it, others don't. i trust that u'll make up your mind one way or another. edit: lol, after posting i just saw your own post just above mine, so, nevermind. congrats! let us know what u think and feel free to ask about anything u might get stuck on!

Below average? I would say the X1600 is a bit above average. All the MacBook Pro's come with the X1600 anyway, just either 128MB or 256MB. My 128MB version plays games great!! COD2 (native 1440x900, med-high settings), CounterStrike Source (1440x900, everything max), and various other games, they all play great on my lowly 2.16Ghz and 128MB X1600.

completely agreed. This card will play anything currently made to run on these machines.
