Which Acer shoud I get?

Thread Starter
Accidently spilled coffee into my very old Dell laptop -so I'm looking for a new one...

Seriously thought about this one (882 US Dollars, 670 Euro..9 because it's about what I am willing to spend and I like my friend's Acer -->

Details from Acer (same model group) -->

Will be using it mostly for studying, surfing, and p2p. Most advanced tasks will be a bit of Photoshop and the occasional video concersion (avi files to dvd, RatDVD and so on...no editing as such).. and I won't be playing any games on it (online 8-ball as a maximum)

Will this Acer be Ok for my purposes? I'm mainly concerned about processor and ram, but don't know much about it..

Here are the specifications for my old desktop -->
CPU: AMD Athlon XP, 1100 MHz
Motherboard: ACS K7S5A
RAM: 256 MB (PC2100 DDR SDRAM)
Grafics: NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 440 (Microsoft Corporation) (64 MB)
Sound C-Media CMI9738 @ SiS 7012 Audio Device

Generally my desktop works fine for me... well, it's NOT exactly fast when I edit in Photoshop or convert an AVI file to DVD and so on ... what can I expect from the Acer??

Additional Q's:

1-Will it run Vista smoothly?

2-What do I need to buy to get it on the internet (wireless) using my ADSL-connection (regular Zyxel router)

3-Tired of burning cds... what do I need to play music on the laptop but get the sound (wireless) through mu regular stereo equipment?

4-Does the Acer have some kind of quick-start to play cds(dvds without having to go through the whole Windows start up?

OR:
Is this Acer (AMD Turion x2) perhaps a better deal? (1059 US Dollars/ 805 Euros) -->

I'm willing to spend the extra money if it makes a big difference.. or maybe it's overkill for my purposes??
..and how about the noise and heat in Acers? ...any problems?

Hope to hear from you guys... I will probably be buying it in a few days..

My mom has an Acer, similar setup with the AMD proc etc etc. Don't expect it to be blazing fast for DVD converting or photoshop. With a budget like you're on, I'd try finding a used Dell 9300 or something like that that is still under warranty. Pentium M, Core Duo, even Pentium 4 will blow the socks off of that AMD processor in all aspects, games included. AMD rocked the world with their desktop stuff for the last few years, but they've fallen off of that chair. The only reason to buy AMD is price, and in fact the only reason to buy Acer is price. If you can at all, find something Intel P4 or newer based. XPS m140, Inspiron 6000, Inspiron 9100/XPS Generation 1 are a few Dells that come to mind. Or shoot, pick up the Alienware m5500 that's for sale here on the forums!

Another cheap/AMD option is the Inspiron 1501. They're dirt cheap for what you get, but if you're not a Dell fan, it won't help you. I recommend Dell for most people that are on a tight budget, so don't think I have tunnel vision or anything. I know there's other options, but hard to find for less than $882.
