Sony VGN-AR270-4200rpm drives too slow?

Thread Starter
Thinking about getting this model with two 200gb 4200rpm drives, but are these drives too slow for video use? I have seen reviews of other brands and models with 4200rpm drives, with 2GHz processor and 2gb memory, and they were almost as fast as the Dell xps models. Look at the cnet review of the the Toshiba Satellite P105-S9722.

4200 is a bit slow. 5400rpm is much better.

I'm a very agressive user. The 4200 rpm will get you by, but you may seldomly experience a few seconds of harddrive seeking. I'm in Photoshop and Flash all the time, so I will be upgrading to 7200 rpm. If I were you, I would get two 120 7200rpm drives, and then get one external usb/firewire drive of atleast 250gb. I've got one internal 4200rpm 200gb, one 250gb western digital usb external (for backup), and will be swapping out the 4200 rpm with a 7200rpm 120gb. Goodluck!

7200 rpm is good but remember that most notebooks don't have a fan where the hard drive is sitting and without that a 7200 rpm hard drive's life will decrease.

Hitatchi Feature tool

Disable acoustic control
Disable Idle spine.

In many cases, hard disks with lower spindle RPMs but with very high areal data density (i.e. high capacity drives) can access data as fast as lower capacity, faster RPM drives because so much more data can be read from or written to the hard disk's platters without the read/write heads moving.

The only case where high spindle RPMs are mandatory is when randomly accessing data that's spread out over the surface of all the hard disk's platters, but this generally won't be the case when handling large contiguous video files.

I understand, the feature I’m talking about is called Acoustic Management.
It’s used for one purpose only. To reduce power consumption. I upgraded my
HD to a 7200 RPM because I use Turbo Cad, a very demanding program, after
Upgrading there was very little difference. So I used Sandra Engineer to bench test
My HD, It was performing about ¾ what it should have been, Sandra’s tip recommended
Disabling acoustic management. So I did. There was a big improvement after doing so.
Its worth downloading. It also has many other great features.
Smart Options

DMA modes
Sata settings & options
Cash level
Power Mode
And Acoustic Management

PS Is alma a ghost?
