Actually, I don't know as I have not ventured into the "machine anatomy" other than to identify the memory and HDDs. BB may or may not be correct... If he had and 8790 and has "taken a look", then maybe he is correct; however, if he doesn't have one, then ... (figure it out for yourself).... I'm not sure about the warranty for this as the manual infers that this is not a "user" mod... Still not sure here and won't attempt it until I am.

If I do this and it violates/invalidates the warranty - are you going to "stand in" and back up your statement? I mean with $$$$$$$'s!!

hehehe omaha
I'd sign up for the Beachbum protection policy too since reading the review of the GX7 in Other Notebook forum and how the fans on his Hypersonicked 8790 barely ever come on...
I figure with AS5 or AS7 and a passive notebook cooler, the 8790's super fan (you know.. the one with the WHIRRRRrrrr startup) would never even be used -- something to consider for those who are sensitive to the fan noise.

RMA for Refund Requested Today

I have accomplished the RMA request today.

Principles reasons are:

1). Heat issue along with the blinking CAPS-Lock and NUM-Lock and the fans that keep running even after the unit has been shut down by Windows.
2). Battery can not support the unit at full capacity - Mine quit working.
3). Can not keep a stable connection with the Internal WiFi and matching router.

After the CC is credited with the refund, I'll purchase another 8790 with either a 3.0 or 3.2Ghz processor, No Internal Wifi, No Matching Router, No Subwoofer, and probably switch to 2 60GB-7200Rpm HDDs. I will be forced to get the DVD+-R/RW unit as the straight -R units don't appear to be offered anymore.

I think that the 8790's, in general are good units; however, I received one that was not "up to par" for the reasons indicated.

Now, I'll need to clean all the stuff off the HDDs and contact PC Torque for the shipping label and send it back.

Hard Disk Drive - Rapid Clicking

The disk drive (left one when viewed from front of unit) has suddenly developed a sudden "clicking" sound. This HDD could be heard to click one time when the unit was either turned on or turned off. It sounds like there are more than 10 "Clicks" per second or more - not real loud; but noticable. Just started this morning for a few seconds and now is "clicking" most of the time. The Hard Disk Indicator light does not show any activity. Unit has been powered on for about 5 hours today??

Does anyone else notice that their units exhibit the same behavior?

Does PC-Torque pay all shipping to return your laptop?

Not normally. I bought the insurance so they will this time. The $30.00 cost is not refundable so it's the same thing as me paying for the shipping.

Yes -- it has happened to me occasionally with no rhyme or reason. The HDD light is off, and I'm not doing anything disk intensive and the clicking right underneath the left palmrest will incessantly go on and on and on....

However, I am not able to replicate it and it hasn't happened in the last 3 days.

RMA has been received and I have sent email to PC-Torque for the shipping label (insurance). I will be ordering another on after the credit has cleared.

One Last Note - WiFi and Router

I switched back to my old Linksys router late this afternoon. The problems expressed appear to be centered on the router and not the internal WiFi. I suspect that it may be a bad router or it isn't putting out enough RF or doesn't have a large enough antenna to send/capture the signal from the internal WiFi device. The old Linksys router has two antenna's.

I'm going to miss not having an 8790 for the new couple of weeks.

Make sure they ship it properly. I didn't bug Sager for one day and they screwed up the shipment. Instead of 2-Day air they sent it via random UPS ground. I don't even know if they even bothered fixing my notebook. My rage is running amok.

Sorry for the hijack, just warning you that Sager is having difficulties honoring their warranty agreements. Bug them constantly, show no mercy.

They will not be sending my unit back. They will be sending a Credit to PC Torque that will then be credited back to me. 30 Day money back policy.

too late for me to stop shipment. already in transit. somewhere.

G-Omaha, I have a question about the audio of the 8790. It seems to me that all the ports are doing double, or even triple duty. According to Sager, one port is doing SPDIF out/Center + subwoofer out/Mic in. Another is rear LR out/Line in. The last is just plain line-out. The two ports are both input and output. How does that work? Is some sort of splitter included? If so, I can't even imagine how many segments will be in on the jack for the triple duty port. Should it have at least 5 segments? Thanks

Sorry Delta, I didn't play with these very much. From my understanding, you set the various modes in the properties screen within windows control panel (sound effect manager & Sounds and Audio Devices). These settings allow you to "toggle" between the configurations that you want active. The 8890's had a similiar setup and included the appropiate cables - the 8790 does not include the cables. Take a look through Steve's (Aussie's) 8890 Review as he did a very good job explaining something like what you ask. You might also PM him and reask the question. He apears to be a very good tech and he has the 8890 service manual so he can explain the circuitry/logic to you better than I can.

Sorry that I couldn't help more.

"Additionally, the way that the 8790 machine is constructed, the "heat issues" with the 4780 simply "go away".

GO, That was your quote on a thread today describing the advantages of a 8790 over a 4780, yet yesterday you stated on this thread you were returning (not RMAing) your 8790 for, among other things, overheating problems. ??? Seems a little contrary.
