Mr. G-Omaha is notorious for that kind of thing, but it okay I have dealt with it somehow or another.

Hi G-O
As i consider u a bit of a 'heat related 8790 stuff' expert (what with living in nebraska an all!) i thought id ask a quickie question;

Am i right in saying with mobmeter the 8790 temps can often go above 50C, as in gsferrari's immensely useful and interesting 'interesting and useful' graph. Is this the normal operating conditions

Now iv just read the specs of the dvd drive on my soon to be d870p, and seen that the max operating temp is 50C! (Center Of Top Cover). Its a bit worrying that not many d870p's come with this particular dvd drive.

So mobmeter measures cpu temp?, and how close is the sensor to the dvd drive?

i realise u dont have your red-hot 8790 any more, so does any one think this is a problem. i have images of flaming cd's ejecting from the drive.

The DVD drive is about a foot or so removed from the CPU/GPU. On the other side of the machine. The temperature that MobMeter monitors is real close to the CPU and is not an accurate indicator of temperatures elsewhere on the machine. MobMeter will also measure the HDD temps as long as they are not "RAID". You should be fine in the mid to high 50's - IMHO.

I ordered a replacement machine - New review may follow

OK,

After all that was said (good and bad), I have ordered the following configuration from PC Torque even though I could have saved a couple of nickels elsewhere (I'm comfortable that they will provide "added value" that will offset the small cost difference - Hats off to Adam, Laura, and staff for the assistance that they have provided so far!):

Sager 8790-S Notebook
Display: 17" WSXGA+ LCD (WideScreen 1680 X 1050)
Processor: P4 3.4GHZ Northwood CPU
Video: 256MB ATI Radeon Mobility 9700(M11)
RAM: 1024MB 400DDR Dual Channel(2-512MB)
Main Hard Drive: 60GB 7200RPM
Media Drive: 4X DVD+R/-R/RW/CD-RW
Bay 2 Hard Drive: 60GB 7200rpm
RAID: Hardware Raid 0 configured with OS pre-install
Keyboard Layout: USA
TV Tuner/ Subwoofer/ Battery: NTSC TV Tuner and Remote + 8 Cell battery
Floppy Drive (required to install RAID): External 3.5" Floppy Drive
Modem: 56K RJ11 Phone Modem
Network Card: 10/100/1000 NIC
Operating System: Windows XP Professional
Case: Basic Black business case
Wireless Network: Internal 802.11g TURBO (108Mbps) wireless
Card Reader: Internal 7-in-1 Card Reader
Camera: Integrated Digital Video Camera
Warranty: 1 year warranty, lifetime tech support

You will notice that I did not order the subwoofer, GigaByte Router, and Bluetooth. I did update the HDDs from 80GB 5,400rpm devices to 60GB 7,200rpm devices.

Shipment method elected was 2 Day Air - - - - Now, the wait begains.

I will attempt to create another review thread (time permitting) and address all of the good/bad thing previously observed on my initial configutation. Hopefully, all of the problems have been resolved.

Cheers,

Gary
